I've shamelessly put this thread here rather than tools as I want to try to tap as many of the industrial brains as possible! Oh, and it's also not electrical!

Been asked for a suggestion by my lil' bro' who does precision calibration of industrial kilns for a UK firm operating globally:

They use a laser to get precision measurement in 10deg increments of the shell profile - so basically just a shuttered laser measure that sends back to a spreadsheet - only the kit is now old and needs replacing. At the moment they have to wave this thing around on the end of a series of poles (up to 12m!) as it needs to be within 300mm of the walls, and it's all very clumsy and time consuming (as well as not a very good professional image!) and possibly not even safe. The kit they have at present came from the States and very much looks like something knocked up as a custom job in a workshop at the time.

Ideally, what he'd like to find is something like a rotary laser level that will just sit on a tripod, but doing the vert/horiz scanning instead and just feed data back to a spreadsheet. He's searched and can't find anything, wonder if any of you chaps in industry have come across something along these lines??

Its no coincidence as its from the greek word PYR or FIRE as we know it..... you not made that link before lol ....pyromanic, pyrex ovenware etc etc

Twisted fire starter. Haha. Yeah when I first heard about them I used to think they were something to do with measuring fire intensity and other crazy stuff! All jokes aside they are a fantastic piece of kit especially in the heat treatment industry.

Without knowing the accuracy required its a bit difficult to advise but heres a couple of options to explore:
In the world of machine tools they use highly accurate lasers to check the calibration of the machine's measuring scales, these are going to be accurate to a handful of microns, so wobbling around on the end of a pole probably is'nt in its spec but maybe they also do equipment more suitable to your needs too?
I'm pretty sure you can get level detection switches that use lasers to monitor levels in tanks that arent suited to float switches. You might find one of these is accurate enough, but you would have to play about with it to make it do what you want, or use two, one top limit one bottom?

Hope this has at least given you some thoughts.

Really appreciate the suggestions here chaps, have sent the thread link to my bro' so he can sift through them. Its DISTANCE not temperature they measure (yeah, I can't work out the poles thing either!). That 3D mapping gadgy looks like an amazing toy!!

You confused me here Rich ....what have fancy image capture measurement devices got to do with finding the temp' of a kiln oven for calibration purposes?
Sorry, thought they were measuring size not temperature, would not like to physically wave a pole inside a working kiln!

EDIT I was right, wow, must note that on the calendar!

OK ill give you it this time but blame Rockingits OP as its very ambiguous as ive read it again and still could be taken as wanting a temp' cal' device and/or imaging device...... but made me laugh when he put precision laser device that gets temp measurements in 10 degree increments..... 10 degrees increments and he says precision...... its not seen precision :p

Hey...its his job not mine, what do I know?! ;)

Moley, get a login ^^^ and answer some questions!
