lead cable as garage supply

at a house today the owner wanted extra sockets in garage. at the db the garage supply was a 2.5 t+e up to an iso switch and down into floor but i pops out in the garage in steel tube. so i pop the 1st socket off to find 1.5 mm two core lead cable with cpc soldered to the lead. the wires in the socket all melted. as im only 37 iv never seen lead b4. the owner has agreed swa upgrade.how the circuit lasted is beyond me, fridges, and all sorts in garage. funny thing i still got a zs reading of .84. the breaker is a 60898 16a so it passes.

The only thing that let VIR Lead down is the VIR perishing at the terminations. Strip the lead back 6” and I’d bet it’s perfect. Armourflex glands were ideal to make them off in to. (Put the SWA in though)
Paper/lead will last forever in the right conditions. I diverted some 20 odd years ago, remade them off. They are still in use today and they had been in use for 50 years before I altered them!
