Hi All. got a call today from the plasterers to see if I can repair a cable they chopped whilst chiselling. going to have a look tomorrow but they have informed me its lead sheathed. I've seen it before but never had anything to do with it. I'm guessing its un repairable and rewire is the sensible option. would just like to hear if any of you guys have repaired any lead and what with.
Thanks to all.
Daz.

can be repaired. all you need is to repair the conductors in the usual way ( crimp/solder/ heat shrink, then carefully solder some bare 2.5mm bare copper to bridge the lead. heat shrink over the top. where have all the old skills gone.
You think a modern sparks knows which end of a soldering iron to hold, pfffff I bet you believe in fairies and that the wife still loves you for your good looks and not your Knipex tool collection.

small blow torch, heat sinks on sheath.

another option is to get the cables into a JB. buckle clip each lead sheath, solder a link between the fly ends of the clips, thus keeping the heat away from the lead sheaths.
I was thinking more like the old 0.2 multi core stuff.
When I started doing them, as an apprentice, I used to do 'em perfect, or so I thought, until I was ordered to get the torch set up and start again from scratch.
Yet another form of artwork from the days when sparks were truly sparks.
No offence to today's lads, but things have certainly changed.
It's as if there were 3 or 4 trades to being a good 'un.

I've always liked that video, proper craftsmanship, I'd love to have those skills. There are a few videos about jointing large lead sheathed phone cables too. The ones on the BT website no longer work.
Mobiles with cameras.....if only. I wish I had some old photos of jobs. Rows of big leads from bus bar chambers or forty odd pyros on tray, sweeping into a control panel with 3m tails. Probably all scrapped now.
Must admit, though, some of it bored me to death, then, 'till it all fell into place.

Saw plenty of lead sheathed cable as an apprentice in the 1960’s.
Instruction then was ‘don’t disturb it lad’.
Lead sheath would last for ever, but the conductor insulation within it would disintegrate if moved/disturbed, which I can confirm.
Adding to such a circuit would be wholly in advisable.
Rewire, or don’t touch it with an insulated barge pole!
