Well I'm fed up with the appalling value for money I'm getting with the NIC. This year I've done one domestic job (that I would have been better off without!) and electrical work now makes up less than 10% of the work I do. It's just not worth £500 and a wasted day off work each year for the visit, plus time preparing all the H&S rubbish so he can tick his boxes.

I'm paid up already of course for this year (to April), but haven't yet received word on this years assessment visit. If I'm to leave then I'm not messing around with the assessment in the meantime, so am wondering how to proceed. I obviously don't want to inform them of my intentions until I know what the options are.

I'm guessing from their reputation a partial refund for the rest of the year is out of the question if I cancel mid term, so is the best option to tell the assessor I'm leaving in April and so won't be doing the annual assessment, or will I need to string them along instead and keep moving the date to not breach any of their rules? Ideally I might as well keep the membership and ability to use the certs etc until April as I've paid for it.

Anyone done this? Or got any input?

I haven't done it but I doubt you will get any money back.

I would just use your membership until the end of its term then when they send your paperwork to renew just write back explaining that you are not renewing.

And if you pay by direct debit, make sure you cancel the authority.
 
If you are paid up to April then you are a member until April, that was what the assessment was for last year. If you are going to be no longer registered then just do not pay the next years subs and do not have the next assessment visit.
The chances of a refund are practically zero, so you might as well be registered anyway till April.

Can't you do a Free transfer to Napit (or Elecsa OK they and the NIC are now the same scammers)?

Or Corgi, BSI, Stroma (or whatever it is).

Might set up my own scheme RWJ Approved Contractors..... Can't be that hard... buy a license from the Government and we're away!

Thanks, I suppose it makes sense that this year's visit would be for next years membership. I'll just take that stance with them if they try and insist on a visit this year, can't see it on their paperwork but it does make sense.

I’m with Hiddo on this. I don’t think they’re the type to give a refund. Have you tried asking them anyway how it goes? Also try what oldtimer suggested.

I'm just going to cancel the visit with them and keep my membership until April. It's not like my company's folded or anything, I just do so little electrical work nowadays (pretty much all minor works) that I'm better off doing without the scheme and just using the green certs instead of the red ones.

In 3 years being with them I've only spoken to them each annual visit, so it's been pretty much a waste of money I think just to get on the County Council list (which hasn't resulted in any work)

The only reason I stuck with it last year is not being sure how much grief it would be to go back to them at a later date if I needed to
 
Right well to update you all on this, as you might be surprised!

Spoke to NIC, the inspection this year IS for this year, so basically they can only keep me on the roll if I have the inspection.

I told them I won't have the inspection, as it's a wasted day for me and if I'm not staying on in April I couldn't really care less about meeting their requirements.

So, they called me back and said as they can't keep me on the roll without the inspection, which I won't have, the only thing they could do is refund me for the remaining 6 months of the year.

Let me give you a second to let that last sentence sink in.......

Refund received this week, so thought I'd let you all know - for anyone looking to leave mid term, just do it before your inspection and it seems they don't have another way of dealing with you.
 
No real electrical contracting company would leave approved status, only a chimp would do so, I replied to your last post in the other thread, you need to get a grip and get yourself noticed, the lack of work is purely your fault and no others.

I had to read the username twice - my first thought was how did Cockburn manage to join the NICEIC?!

OP says he hasn't had the results of this years visit but I'm always told on the day. You sign the NICEIC report?
