Hi all,

In the middle of rewring a hotel, customer has just decided he wants a bespoke light fitting made for to hang in the 5 story stair well. He would also like to do away with the emergency light fittings on each landing, as apparently they look too "modern". The new fitting has 30x 6w LED's, I've seen a few of these emergency light conversion kits online, just wondered if anyone had used them and could recommend one.

You're heading for a minefield. Emergency lighting must conform to BS/EN 60598-2-22 as well as other requirements. If you take an existing fitting and convert it to be a maintained emergency light then any certification it originally carried will be invalid. There's lot of scope for problems here and there lots of scope of you being responsible if/when something goes wrong..

I had originally suggested installing similar to the Thorn voyager but he want to keep to a certain theme and these don't fit in to his plan. Marvo I think you're right, I may take a side step on this one and leave it to the company making the light fitting. Thanks for your help.

Yes, that’s often the way. Not all lamps are made the same, some have better / different circuitry. glad it’s sorted easily.

That's fine, so they must have given you specification. All you need to do is install and provide certification in compliance with BS5226:1.

It's a new light fitting that you need, not just a 'cover'. It should be a straightforward job for an electrician... there might be a forum...
