Can we have a system where every installation has its own log book, where it details any work carried out by who, with their own personal registration number, so all work is traceable, if needed. Every notifiable job done, will be sent directly to bco for a fee of £10, larger companies will end up spending more, while smaller companies and people just starting out will pay less than they do currently. Maybe the registration number could be incorporated with trade cards like ecs, jib, cscs ect... and make it covers commercial and industrial too instead of just domestic work.

And installations would need to be checked atleast once every 5 years for insurance reasons similar to car mot's

Mixed feelings about unions though madmac.....a mass voice.......yes! BUT into causing agro for the sake of it.......yes!

Hence the reason that I cannot support ANY of the current Unions. At grass roots most Union blokes are top blokes who love their trade and want whats best for their respective industries. But me personally, I cannot support a Union that pays the Liebore party, and is run by extreme left-wing leaders. I'm sorry I just can't.
Until such time as we get a Union that keeps away from left-wing politics I can't see myself signing up. Nobody wants a Union stuck up the management's backside but I want a Union that represents the centre ground.

Once again lads, I have to agree with you both. Are we not agreed though, that we need a strong union to represent us? And are we also not agreed that not joining the union will only be defeatist?
Just like the SJIB/JIB, we must/have to work with what we've got and try to better it because, I think that to start from scratch, with no resources would be doomed to failure. I am as frustrated and angry as any member out there at the complete and utter lack of any proper organizing or fight from our so called electrical union! That is why I still go along to these bloody meetings, in my own time, and try and change things by speaking up and trying to get them to act. If we all care as much as we are saying about our industry then get involved and start demanding these union officials DO THE JOB THEY ARE PAID BY US TO DO!!!

Joining a Union doesn't mean that I have to stop washing and start reading Marx does it?

Madmac,
Lets cut to the chase fella. Why is there such a discrepancy between Northern (and Scottish/Welsh) sparkies and those from London and the South East? Lets face it mate, most of the opposition to the Unions on this forum comes from lads based in the South East - with the odd northern tory thrown into the mix.
WHY is this? Are we Southern lads all Tory Bankers? No, its because Southern workers DO NOT believe that the Unions represent workers in the South East.
And why do us Southerners not believe that the Unions represent us? Purely because of the unique economical situation of the South East, thats why. For the most part its us Southern lads who are fighting the mass influx of immigrants and non local workers.
I made a statement the other day, that the 'alarm man' took to be a racist comment, and when he pointed it out to me, and I read it back it did indeed seem like a racist comment.
But when I thought about what I had wrote and my thoughts behind it, I realized that from a Londoner's point of view, it wasn't a racist comment that I had made BUT a true reflection of how the white working class are treated in London.
For instance, let me explain about a London/Essex borough called Barking. Now Barking once upon a time was a stanch working class Liebore area. In the same way that everyone in Wales (or so it seems to me) votes for Liebore - so it was for Barking. However, now, most of the white working class people align themselves with the BNP. Why is this?
I don't want people to think that I'm going off onto some right-wing rant here because I'm not mate. I'm just trying to explain with just one example why Londoners feel betrayed by the so-called representatives of the working class. After all, lets not forget that the Union movement was established in order to protect the workers of the capital from the Edwardian exploitation of the poor.
So until we get a Union that represents us Southern working class Tories, as much as Northern socialists, we're never get a united workforce.

Been gettin strong round here too ken have the bnp. A lot of people who would have traditionally voted for the liebore party have gone over to the bnp. People feel really let down by the main parties antics over a long time now. I mean the problems facing our industry have been festering now for years with no sign of abatement. Too many crafty "training centres" springing up taking candidates in with NO previous experience of electrical work-a short course and hey presto:you can install to your hearts content no questions asked. Seems like were all just cash cows to one body or another....

Mate, you've just hit the nail on the head with 6 simple lines. I do waffle on don't I.

Ken and Glenn, you are both saying what you see and believe and I for one agree with you're thoughts about "New Labour", they have sold the working man down the drain and got into bed with the middle and upper classes. What I am proposing in remaining a member of the union is in no way to suggest that you give up you're views and become a pawn of the "New Labour Machine", and I also know that the unions support, financially "New Labour" but we have to try and change the mindset of the union leaders and get them fighting for us again even if that means withdrawing funding from "New Labour"!, something I for one would back hands down!!! The union doesn't belong to "New Labour", it belongs to us the electricians that pay our dues and who they are answerable to! Sorry for the rant boys.

As far as i would be concerned, you use anyone and everyone, whether you like there politics or whatever or not!! If you can bring about a National Register of Qualified Electricians, with there help and influences, ...So Be It!! ...And thank them very much too!!...lol!!!

Cheers for the back up Engineer54, that is exactly my point in a nutshell! You've just got to use whatever resources you have at hand whether you like them, hate them or are indifferent to them, as long as it gets results.

There are so many places where Part P is being discussed I've set up a Facebook page so that we can concentrate them in one place. Part P is being changed by parliament and it's important that we have our say so they get it right this time please join Facebook page:
