What tools or methods do you folks use when lifting carpets? I've had nightmares trying to get Mrs Jones' shagpile up without damaging it (NOT a euphamism) and was wondering if anyone has any techniques that could be helpful.

you need a carpet kicker thingy argos sell them .. and to lift them iv used a flatblade driver with end bent over heat up and bend in vise ...

and for getting floorboards up, treat yourself to a nail puller, i've had them for years (care of grandad originally) but they obviously went missing when other people saw how good they were, so I found a place in USA that sold a more modern version that works alongside your clawhammer and is therefore small enough to fit in toolbox. They simply pull floorboard nails out of the floor ;-)
Collins Industries EZ nail puller ...... i think its called

Confused yea I was thinking of some kind of hook device.

Stretchy I'll have a look for one of them, if it's as good as it sounds it will make me a very happy camper.

There is a picture of one at the bottom of this webpage No Waste Cooking, Sandals from old tires, Hand bags, Tools for Do-It-Yourself'ers : eco-artware Recycling Rag Newsletter

I actually contacted Mr Collins himself (lovely guy) and bought mine and had them shipped over, cost a lot at the time but well worth it. He did say that they were looking for agents in this country and that was about 7-8 years ago i reckon. Before that I had 2No Bahco ones which were british made and looked like big slide hammers but as with all things British made, they lasted forever and company no-longer exists........... Do we make anything anymore?

I do some work for a charity who recycle old tools. We get those Bahco ones in from time to time, but just chuck them because we don't think anyone would need/use them.

Wow, i think they are gold dust, a chippie would love em. I have one that i use when IU have a lot to do, but use the Collins one for convenience as it fits in the tool box

Ringer if you come across another one let me know, there'll be a pretty penny in it for whatever charity you work for (or you if you're an unscrupulous s. of a b.!)

Stretch the website in the link from the website you posted is dead.... theres another collinstools.com but they don't seem to do this tool, can't seem to find it anywhere....

Long nose pliers and start in a corner just enough to get it up so I can get my hand in. Then pull the bugger up

Do the exact same. I've got a nice bashing screwdriver with a rounded blade that I run around the skirting board edge to let the carpet fall back into the gap when it goes back down, doesn't even look like it's been up:D

I disagree. IF you have a use for it, it's just the tool you use. And when you do have a use, it'll be one of those "wish I'd bought it years ago"...
