New Member and wannabe electrician. I'm teaching myself for now for obvious reasons.

My problem is an extension light circuit and the conundrum is:

The circuit will only work / operate from the main circuit breaker. As soon as I wire a switch into the circuit it will not stay on and immediately trips. I'm guessing the solution is obvious to an expert but not to me.

Sounds like you got a tiger by the tail. So you had a go at extending your lighting circuit. Presumably it was all working before you started? If so, then something you have done had cause a short of the cables somewhere. If you have an MFT you need to use it. Otherwise I am afraid you will need an electrician in to get you out of the problem. Maybe try post some photos of what you have done especially the connections.

Is the switch creating a dead short when operated instead of switching the live? Is there and damage to switch cable?
