Hi all,

any help here is appreciated very much. I've been doing electrical work for a woman and her sister asked if I could fix a lighting problem for her.

Problem that she had was a water tank in her loft began to leak and came through the light in the bedroom. Light was working fine until this happened to her. The insurance company paid out and got a subby in to do up the room, although the lighting was not messed with (so she thinks anyway). I went along to take a look at it today to try and fix the problem, even though it has been a few years since I last done any work on lighting.

The problem I came across is that when the light switch is pressed the light still stays on! I opened up the switch to see if that was the problem with it, tested the wiring and found that both wires in the switch are live. (one red and one black) I tried to trace the wires in her loft but with no luck as its full of junk.

I tested the wires at the cealing and it has two red wires joined in a block, two black wires in seperate blocks and two earths joined together in a block.

the two reds are live, one black is live. I checked the switch at the top of her stairs and this works perfectly although to my astonishment it has a black wire that is covered in red tape, i removed the tape and the wire is actually live, within this switch their is a red wire also cut and live. the switch has a blue and yellow wire in L1 and L2 respectively and a black in the common. the blue i am certain comes from the downstairs switch, yellow i am unsure of. their is also another two red wires running behind the switch joined in a block.

anyone able to help as to why the switch in the room has two live wires and thus stopping the light being switched off? would it be to do with the wires and block at the cealing not being wired correctly? also any help with the switch with the multiple wires?

no wonder i normally stick to sockets and consumer units!

you dont say if your a spark of a Diyer as from your question IMO your best bet would be call someone qualified to sort it our before you hurt yourself or someone else

mogga is spot on there, the blacks with red sleeve are switched lives, the red/yellow/blue are 2 way strappers. you need expert help on this on mate.

I'm in a bad mood tonight so I'm not going to hold back.

Stop messing about with things you don't understand and get a professional in that could sort this out blind folded.

im qualified as i am certain i put in my first post. just not worked on a lighting circuit for at least three years now and my memory of them is very shabby. only been doing sockets and wiring new cu's in houses. not been near or even looked at a lighting circuit since i changed my own in the house. probably closer to 4 years since i done any for a customer.

your help is invaluable thanks! i could give a ---- if your in a bad mood. its easy to forget things when you dont go near them for years!

Well don't go near them and never even think about touching a cu if you don't know about basic 2 way lighting circuits. End of, get a qualified electrician in before you do any damage.

YOU Ask questions about HNC HND ect ect YOU ARENT Qualified and IMO Shouldnt be fitting CUs in new houses you also have a post stating your doing electrical engineering ( NOT Qualifiying you to "Fit CUS and Sockets")

IMO people with a little knowlage can be worse than those with NO know;lage specialy when they ask and are told best option is to CALL SOMEONE

Sorry for the curtness of my reply but LEARNING is about listening to those more experienced than yourself

Antoher silly one.

especially with amongst other things quote of the year "no wonder i normally stick to sockets and consumer units! "

Somebody like playing silly beggars.

the two way is not the one i am overly worried about! it the one in the room that had the water pouring through it.

seeing as both wires in the switch (only two wires) are both live at all times unless the mcb is switched off. from what i do remember about doing a simple lighting circuit the wires should both be red (brown nowadays i'd imagine) one of which is a black wire that should be sheathed. at the cealing rose (which by the way is not in the cealing) the black sheathed should run to the live of the celaing rose and the blue wire should run to the neutral.
what is getting me is that both wires are live at all times.

i mean how hard is it for you to just type in what i am missing and give me a break.

From the cu... live to sw1 com, sw1 L1 to sw2 l2, sw1 l2 to sw2 l1, sw2 com to ceiling rose (that's not on the ceiling). With all strappers indicated with brown sleeves so no confusion for the next electrician. Make sure you have a cpc the full length of the cable.

sorry mate but,
"though to my astonishment it has a black wire that is covered in red tape"
sets all sorts of alarm bells ringing!!
I have no idea what qualifications you are referring to but to be astonished by this suggests you should wrap up and head back to college, the negative replies received here are more out of concern for your welfare than a personal attack
