I would have agree with most of the comments already added. This is a simple lighting circuit and should be worked out within the hour. Don't you know another electrician who can attend the property with you, to sort out this problem. You are really putting yourself and others at danger if you don't understand a domestic lighting installation.

sorry mate but,
"though to my astonishment it has a black wire that is covered in red tape"
sets all sorts of alarm bells ringing!!
I have no idea what qualifications you are referring to but to be astonished by this suggests you should wrap up and head back to college, the negative replies received here are more out of concern for your welfare than a personal attack
i would be astonished as well.....red tape. should have been sleeved

have you tried disconnecting the black from the switch ? if the light then goes off it is probably a faulty switch the two blacks at the light are a switch wire and a neutral this is what the light should be connected across not the reds in a connector which is permanant live

This is surely a wind-up.

Buy some more red tape, re-attach it around the black cable, and im sure the lights will work properly again.

If this doesn't work then you could put the kettle on, sit back and draw yourself a diagram.

The mind boggles.

Don't forget to turn off the cement mixer whilst drinking your tea.

Rabby ,very rare youll find 2 reds or 2 browncable in the switch wires ,more likley you will find black and red with the black identified with red tape or sleeve now its brown sleeve, with blue and brown wire, which if fully complient , by what your desribing and due to the fact there has been water present i think youll find that its not a wiring fault but the switch has failed due to water so replace the switch ,and all should be ok

U sound dangerous, i dont fink u shud go anywhere near that switch. back off n prevent puttin any1 in danger lol
