Hello, can anyone explain the reason for this.

Went to a friends the other day as the RCD was tripping regularly, pinpointed it to a faulty dishwasher, anyway........

Whilst I was there in the loft doing another job, I noticed the lighting was wired in singles, the live and earth loop in&out was at the switch, neutral loop in&out at the light fitting. Why would it have been wired this way and not looped at the same place?

Thanks
Pete

Sounds to me like a diy'er who couldn't work out his loop and switching.

Just a thought....does that mean the light is switching on the neutral not the live?

Well, starting with the basics, there's nothing wrong with wiring in singles so long as they're in conduit or trunking etc, my guess is not?

Second, I can't see any benefit to a pro installer at all - even if you had miles of single left over from another job then you still wouldn't do it this way, it's just too much like hard work. The house may have been wired from new, but by who?

When you say singles, do you actually mean 6241Y:

And not 6491X singles?

Lighting wired in singles is still fairly common in my experience. There are a couple of church conversions, and a mill conversion that i have worked on locally, that have been wired within the last 10 to 15 years, that are wired in singles. I wouldn't do it, but that doesn't make it wrong, i prefer t&e.

Cheers..............Howard

right.....makes a bit more sense now. Well, to a point.
