Lighting wiring

Looks like the downstairs lighting is all wired from a central junction box hidden in floorboards, was this standard in the 70s? Cheers

Yes it was standard years gone by I use to work for the council and all the old boys use to rewire houses using this method. They didn't like the new way of 3 plating had many arguments

My 1970s semi is the same for the upstairs lighting, but wired in single&earth rather than twin&earth. All from one central junction box. Daz

Bet that's not the original 70's connection though, sleeved and blocked earths? I thought the norm back then was to leave the lot bare and twist em all together under the box!

There was water dripping on it too. Intelligent solution by the home owner? Throw a plank of wood over the top!

Re joint box. Usually on the landing. Later though due to fitted carpets I used to put them just inside a bedroom door so as bit more accessible at a later date. Hate joint boxes now....all 3 plate wiring now....but now hate light fittings designed for one cable only!

Agh! Seconded, cos obviously no one ever wants 2 lights (or more) so why bother making room for them!

And god forbid having to fit one in place of an old pendant with more connections than Clapham Junction!

That's a bodge. The 1970's was governed by the 14th Edition of IEE Wiring Regulations and that shambles would never have complied with those Regulations.
