Hi people I've been asked to price to test the lightning protection on a building in Liverpool. It has 18 testing points and is a flat accessible roof. I need someone to do this as I have no experience of this line of work and how much you would want for doing it? How long would it take? I will need all appropriate test sheets etc for my client. Need replies ASAP to my email

Difficult to say, obviously, but sounds like a days work or thereabouts. What's that, ÂŁ400? Plenty of genuine firms out there. Have used Omega Red (nation-wide outfit) for general LP work, install and T&I. No complaints. Must say have tended to use specialists when it came to less the ordinary, telecom masts, bomb dumps, that sort of thing.

Depends on what's on the roof, and what equipment on the roof has been bonded to the LP system. Remember, ...every tape/cable joint needs to be tested for it's low ohmic value. It could take at least a day just to inspect and test the roof portion of this LP system, It could also take at least a day to inspect and test the earth rods too, especially if test point locations for temporary spikes for test equipment is restricted.

In the UK, it's best to get a specialist company in to undertake this work, as they will have the required test equipment needed, and the relevant procedural inspection and test certificates that need to be provided to the client.

It's not rocket science to be able to test and inspect LP systems, but it does take a bit of knowledge and experience to know what your doing and perhaps more importantly Why!!!
