Hi all,

Advice please...

I am considering having my loft converted but only want to pay for the shell and do the rest myself. Times are hard!!!

I have an old cu that is wire fuse. Will i need to change the cu box and have all the current circuits tested or is there a way to have a secondary cu from my old supply. the loft will need ring, lighting, smoke alarm on three floors to include two current levels and a shower circuit.

I realise that i will pay to have the testing done but really need to keep costs down so the wiring to the cu area i can do.

Any advice greatly received.

Brendan

A loft conversion will significantly increase the value of his house. A rewire will not.
The number of rooms in the loft conversion is irrelevent, there are 4 circuits the load is big, and a new C/U will have to be installed somewhere anyway. The guy clearly stated he wants to save money, and this would ultimatly be the cheaper solution.
lol!!

But it WILL save him having to reduce the price of his property when he sells it, to cover the cost of rewiring the place won't it??

So what are you saying, every time you add a small extension or whatever, best to bung in a CU to cover it, cause the guy won't invest in updating his main CU or in rewiring it!!! So over a period of time you could end up with 3 or 4 CU's in a standard 3 bedroom house This is getting sillier by the minute!! lol!! You START with the basics, you don't do the basics after major re-fits.... And starting with a CU change or if required a full rewire is, or should be considered a Basic Requirement!! More importantly, It also gives his family a safer environment to live in!!

and velux skylights, kingspan between the roof rafters, carpets, tiling, plumbing, structural repairs after plumbing, stairs, etc., etc, try doing that lot with a few sheets of cardboard and mucky dumb fibreboard.

these things never turn out to be cheap, even a qualified spark can cut costs on electrical work but will still need to pay out for materials and all the other trades involved!

this is for his own property.

And that's before his misses get involved with the carpets, curtains and those expensive finishing touches!!!!!!!

understand times are hard for everyone, but some times think us sparks are our own worst enemy and part P won,t fully succeed as hoped till diy electrics are banned alltogether and the diy sheds stop giving out "how to guides".many of us spent a lot of time and money learning what we know today, you don,t see lawyers dentists etc giving out freebies.

Like legal aid and NHS dental work you mean? lol

For all we know, the OPer may be on forums for all the other trades trying to work out how to get their loft conversion done for a bag of marbles and a plate of sandwiches. Maybe.

A re-wire seems a little over the top to even suggest!! lol
new CCU & few new circuits, job done!

That depends doesn't it?? But i did say if you read the post you quoted ''If Required''!!

Anyone that suggests installing a new CU for what is a bedroom, really needs to think again!! That's exactly what i would expect from a keen DIY'er to come up with!!!

Agreed!! DIY electrics is what causes the most trouble for electricians, because nothing has been wired logically! Nightmare

All conjecture. You cannot truly offer the solution of solutions until you've seen the job. Some or all of what I've seen posted may be the best, it sepends on what I can't see.

OP, at the very least post roughly whereabouts you are in country & get a proper sparky to have a look. If only for a quote.
