Got a problem, Client wants a loft light fitted. Taken feed bedroom ceiling rose, Connected to live, neutral and earth terminal, run 1.5mm T&E to pull switch and then to new ceiling rose.

Swiched on power, lighting circuit trips....disconnected feed at bedroom ceiling rose, house lights work ok, as soon as I reconnect the new cable the lighting circuit trips....Not sure if I'm doing anything wrong or not.

There are no earths on lighting circuit, BS3036 fuse board. The property was rewired around 30 years ago by the clients husband. Opened up a JB what was accessable , cables being terminated into same terminals, cannot work out what are switch cables and the live/neutral from one cable is being terminated into the same terminal.

Client does not want me to investigate as all the lights work ok, but I would like to know for my own interest. Seems a basic job but I cannot fathom out why it doesn't work as it should.

I agree with a possible dead short at pull switch, but I connected both line cables to L1 and neutrals to common and connected earths to earthing terminal, even tried it vice versa. Maybe not seeing wood for trees but I can't see what I've done wrong???
Any advice greatly appreciated!

Are you avin a laff???????????

How can you possibly expect the light to work with the pullswitch connected like that. Think about it now....BOTH lines in the common so permanent live to light as not switched, and Both neutrals in L1....as soon as you switch the pullswitch you are connecting L-N!!!!!!!!

The line from the existing rose should be your common and the line to the attic light in L1. Neutrals in a connector by themselves.

Schoolboy error....:p

Been working as a Electrician in Industry and Domestic for years, qualifications coming out my head..... but I still don't know everything...... learning everyday!
I thought this was a forum where any questions could be asked without fear of being slagged off and that you can ask for advice no matter how much or little knowledge you have.
I'm afaid coxy, electricians like you will put off people from subscibing to this forum!!!!

yes we all make mistakes

at a job recently a sparkie had linked class 1 spots in 3-core flex and never bothered to run the cpc the short distance to the consumer unit

probably didn't realise he made it worse by linking with the 'dummy cpc'

mind you he also bypassed the rcd -need i say more

We all have bad days but experience shows us how to sort out these problems in a logical controlled manner. On a fault like this you know it was something you had done wrong so try drawing a diagram of what you have done and what the switch is doing. You will find it will help you see what is going wrong. I still use the same procedure sometimes before connecting/fault finding on control circuits where there is no information on site.
