Looking for 'Warm Glow' dimmable ceiling downlighters.

Hello.

Bro currently has a half-dozen old R80 ceiling downlighters in his even older flat. He's having the ceiling reboarded and is also looking to advance at least one part of his life to the 21st century, so would like LEDs there as a replacement.

A must is that these new lamps are 'warm'-dimmable so that they replicate the behaviour of tungsten or halogen lamps, and not just dim their light output whilst remaining intensely white.

I have used Philips' LED 'Warm Glow' GLS lamps myself and find they are superb and indistinguishable from ordinary bulbs in the way they behave. Which downlighter types could people recommend, please, that also do this?

I've looked through this forum and found references to 'Enlite E8' and 'Hybrid 9', but can't find if these are 'warm'-dimmable?

Another issue is that the flat is old - Georgian or Victorian - and the old downlighters kind of fitted in with this by being so large - they must be around 125mm outside diameter? Smaller downlights would probably look too modern.

Can anyone offer suggestions, please?

We are even toying with simply fitting new R80 units but slotting ordinary GLS-style lamps in there (the Philips 'Warm Glows' I mentioned) as we know that will do the job, and unless anyone looks upwards at the lamps they shouldn't notice that the lamps are smaller than the fittings... This has the added advantage of being cheap - the Philips lamps can be had for about £8 each, and the R80 holders for around the same.

Any thoughts - or alternative ideas - would be appreciated. Thank you.

Jcc do a fitting with large bezel which takes a gu10 lamp, search JC94238 colour of lamps is stated in kelvin or K, if around 6000k it will be very white, so you are looking for 2700k which is warm white, all much of a muchness but look for average lumen output of approx 400+ the dimmer must also be suitable for leds.

I doubt you will find this and as the ceiling is being bordered over its not an issue.

What is important to consider is that R60 and R80 lamps have a arger "spread" of light than modern lights, so you may nee additional lights ...

As you say, Murdoch, the ceiling is being boarded so any downlighter can be fitted, but I think it's a case of not making it look too modern, hence trying to keep it as similar as possible to existing.

Any recommendations for complete LED ceiling downlighters which 'warm' further as they are dimmed?

I have seen Ro80 LED reflector lamps advertised before so I know that they are available.

Orluna.co.uk have LED lamps that have warm dim and look great, they also have trimless versions available.

Cheers, Murdoch - yes, I've found some R80 dimmable LED lamps, but not one that suggests it's 'warm' dimmable.

I've since had confirmation from Philips themselves that their R80s are not warm-glow dimmable (like the GLS lamps they make), and also from three LED lighting specialists to confirm that none of their dimmable R80's have this feature either.

Having installed dimmable LED lamps in my son's bedroom only for him to tell me the same eve to 'get rid', I simply do not understand how folk can tolerate non-warming types! They are hellish! When dimmed, it looks as tho' you have miniature Christmas tree LEDs in you light fitting - awful.

Bro is almost certainly going for the same size R80 ceiling fittings since they are larger than most downlights and this suits his old rooms more, but also because he hates the 'sparkly' look of most modern reflector LED lamps. So our thoughts are that he has the actual fittings replaced with new along with new dimmers which will be LED compatible, and then re-use his old filament lamps until warm-dim LED alternatives come along.

I've even told him I'd buy a dozen cheap R80 LED lamps, remove the front 'lenses' from them and then fix these on to Philips 'warm-glow' GLS lamps using transparent adhesive...
