136.4 ohms at lights whilst doing the loop test before we change the board. Guessing they've been lucky ? Plus side is I get to put an earth stake in were see how much I remeber from the one I did 2 years ago

Hi Steve, I don't personally think it is realistic, especially with the topography of the UK!

In my experience, an extra rod is always going to provide a far more stable reading than that of a single rod.

There are also more suitable alternatives to earth rods, such as mats or plates where it's very difficult to knock earth rods into the ground.

I'll go I to more detail later but to put te earth rod in I got a hammer and hammered it into the ground which I didn't of to hard. I'm at the next job now so have to go and then I'm driving back so once I'm all done and fed watered and ern to the gym I'll get back on and give a more detailed reply of what we did and hopefully I'll get some good information back teaching me what I haven't learnt today. Best with me gents. And thanks for the replys so far although I haven't managed to read the last one yet

My mates just on the phone so will try to explain what I've done. Got there this morning and did ze I lights it was 136 and the hugest I had ever seen. Turns out the 16mm earth which was terminated at the board was a meter long as had been poked through the whole attaching to nothing. I just do what I'm told so I drilled a whole through the wall and and fed a 16mm through it. The earth rod was freaky skinny and about a meter long, I got a hammer and bashed it down which was nice and easy. Next job was to get a earth clamp and attach that to the earth rod where I attached the 16mm earth. This was then taken to the board met I didn't have time to check and he did this. I wanted to test it but he had already done it and we can't hang about so I'll have to wait for another opportunity to do that. I've got a pic which I'll try and upload later of my work to show what I mean but all u can see is the cable and then a black box eith electrical safety earth do not remove on the top.

After er he finished the board change I had to go round and redo the earth loop on all circuits.

Final results were for cooker 85 ohms

lights 84 ohms

shower 86 ohms

He seemed fine with this filled in a cert and we left

Having never installed a rod on a domestic premises I wouldn't like to comment. Adding a compound like bentonite or urea, will decrease the Ra with not much extra work involved.

I do know that every earth rod I have installed has had an Ra of less than 0.5ohm. Unless it had to be higher. I did have bentonite and a drilling rig handy, so clearing a 20m hole was easy work.

I just cant see it happening Rob!!

"So Mrs Brown.. The CU change has cost you £300, unfortunately I have to get your Ra down so will have to dig a volcanic crater in your back garden with a drilling rig and fill it with clay, this will be an extra £1000"

Oh dear oh dear oh dear!

Now I know full well that you know better than that.
You've seen how to test an earth rod properly.

That rod we tested on the festival site came in at just over 20 ohms and it was only one of the 3 rods I had on that system. And that was an installation with a lifespan of only a few days!

Precisely, being in a quarry that kind of cost never mattered.

Get an SDS adaptor, I've seen people hammer in >5m rods with little difficulty.
