Discuss Low IR readings on lighting circuit - 0.654 Mohms in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

Actually these days tend to stick to weekends but now and again I just can't say no!

I was tempted to have a little tipple tonight but by the time I got back from running my big fat --- around a five aside footy pitch....I was just too knackered..lol
May be tomorrow though!!

As said, it is probably a load you haven't disconnected but it does no harm chasing it down just in case.

Just a hint though, if it is low at 250V it really isn't a good idea to test at 500V or when you do find that load you missed you might just find yourself replacing it free of charge after it has objected to 500V up its chuff.... :(

Cheers Guys,

Yes, when I read similar threads they said the same. Why does it make it ok if you have a good Live/neutral combined IR reading? The IR between L and N is still poor and could mean a problem? (Although I'm guessing it doesn't as otherwise you guys wouldn't have said it!). Why does the good reading between L+N combined and E show that it is an appliance still not accounted for and not a wiring/damp/poor insulation problem?

If the low reading was caused by damp, I would expect to find L-E/N-E readings to be of very similar values as the L-N readings as I'd expect damp to affect all conductors.
I'd say, by your readings that you have load connected somewhere, reconnect the circuit, power up and put clamp meter on it, to see if there is any load being drawn, this may help you identify what's on there.

I have had this similar reading before a few times funnily enough. I am pretty sure it is the RCD coil. Make sure the rcd is not included in any part of the test

I have low readings such like before, it's just tracking down the load. What about pir light connected straight onto the supply (i.e. no switch). Favourite is socket wired into the lighting for loft tv booster, or even a shower pump!
