Hi All.

I have a taxing question that I am having trouble with it is as follows; Another contractor is running a non LSZH external cable into a building and we are wiring in LSZH, my question is how long can we run the non LSZH into the building before it needs to be LSZH Cable. And to make this question harder can I also have the the BS7671 reg number.

Many Thanks for any help.

John.

I'm sorry John but in what context are you talking about. Why are you using Low smoke halogen cables? Is this a design criteria from an engineer or something left over in the van?

There are no regs concerning where and when you should change from one type of cable to another, but section 422 does deal in areas that are of particular risk from fire.

To be honest I think you need to supply us with more detail in order to help you mate

Hi Malcolm.

We have been instructed to use LSZH Cable, but because the external cable is under ground and outside the other contractors have been instructed to use non-LSZH to keep costs down. I did call NIC EIC and they didnt have an answer, so called IEE which is now IET and there tech help line is not open until friday. Not really much more to tell you. But thank you for pointer on Regs.

To be honest John the cable being pulled in I assume is a supply cable and so will be terminating into a switch panel of some sort, so it would either be terminating through a poly pipe or a gully/trench depending I assume on it's size.

So is there a distance from where it enters the building to this panel? Is it exposed inside the building? and if yes what distances are we talking about.

My plan would be whoever has instructed you to use LSZH cable, ask them what they want you to do, put the ball back into their court. They should be making this decision not you really.

Thanks Malcom I have e-mailed them about 15 mins ago stating just that, think it will be down to them to sort out as I cant get a definate answer, thanks for your time.

I assume said contractor is part of a Part P scheme (NICEIC, Napit, few others..) in which case complain to them. They'll investigate (in theory)...
