In the past someone has connected a lighting circuit to the ring main via a switched and fused surface mounted box, this is now obsolete, so I'd like to remove it to tidy the wall up.

This the same spurred light you wanted to fit back in September 2017.

What used to be classed as a "Ring Main" is classed as a Ring Final Circuit or RFC not to be confused with a Radial Final Circuit, can be confusing, but nothing brasses me of more than people using the cincorrect definitions of electrical things. A Ring Main still exists but is normaly designated for distribution circuits, such as a HV Ring Main, as an example. Check out Appendix 15 in BS 7671 if you have a copy that is.
