What's the best way to make good prior to mounting knockout boxes?

I have a situation where, along with all wires in the cavity, the back boxes were mounted in a hole and basically held in place with plaster.

Would you put new back box in and use the holes in its edges to fasten to wall, or would you fill out the whole and then mount the back box?

I'll try and attach a photo...

You don't want to be bridging the cavity, if you can help it, and you need something a little mor robust than plaster to hold it in.
I think I'd try using grip fill or cement between the edge of the hole and the back box.

Use a wooden baton in the cavity that extends wider than the hole and screw fix on the sides where the box will sit
Once you have your baton fixed, screw the metal box to the baton and patch around with bonding or sand/cement

Wasn't sure if using wood was still allowed, but thinking about it, we mount boxes in timber studs etc, so why not!
Thanks, I have some, so that is a good idea.
It's nice doing this in my own home - a great place to practise! Thank you.

When attaching the batten in the cavity, I presume a bit of angle or something like that, to attach to the inner-leaf of the cavity would be used to fix it in to place, yeah?

You wont need to fit anything in the cavity

You drill holes through the wall either side of the socket hole
Hold the baton in the cavity against the inner skin, pass the wood screws through and tighten them up

plaster board adhesive, it sticks like you know what to a blanket and sets pretty quickly too

Totally agree got a bag on the wagon, had it for years its like the magic salt bag at the bottom of the sea never seems to deplete, only cost about 4 quid and its a huge sack of quick set joint filler or dab. It's brilliant.

It does look a bit green doesn't it!

My wood is definitely brown :)

But in all seriousness, that is how I visualised your description, Des, and so just wanted to clarify with a diagram of the timber in the cavity...

Sounds like I understood wrongly! (?)
