What's the best way to make good prior to mounting knockout boxes?

I have a situation where, along with all wires in the cavity, the back boxes were mounted in a hole and basically held in place with plaster.

Would you put new back box in and use the holes in its edges to fasten to wall, or would you fill out the whole and then mount the back box?

I'll try and attach a photo...

i would get 2 20mm conduit couplers and fix to the back breeze block using long screws, then bond box in with plaster. if the couplers are too short, fit bushes one or both ends and adjust to get the box in a flush position. OK, you are bridging the cavity, but only like is done by wall ties.

The wood is a better idea. Not bridging the cavity at all then. Fixing onto external wall using long screws will give moisture a direct route into the back of the KO box, it will rot in no time.

It does look a bit green doesn't it!

My wood is definitely brown :)

But in all seriousness, that is how I visualised your description, Des, and so just wanted to clarify with a diagram of the timber in the cavity...

Sounds like I understood wrongly!

Other than the poor choice of colour scheme, that is exactly how I would do it and believe me,as far as I am concerned there is no better and easier way,its a simple job and best kept that way
