I've got a makita impact driver, the original brushes lasted about 2 and a half years, so I bought some more (what I believe to be official makita brushes) and they lasted about 6 months.

Replaced them again last week and now they've already worn out.

Anyone know any reason why they would start wearing out so fast? Is the impacter just knackered?

Any thoughts?

You've probably got a dirty commutator and next replacement give it a good clean out. Dust and particulates act as grinding dust so will shorten the wear time. Alternatively GO BRUSHLESS!

Sell it, buy the brushless equivalent.

Could be a damage commutator. Give it a clean with some fine glass paper.

No but it could be cleaned and checked by the user. Bare units hardly cost now so you are correct. Buy a new one and service the spare.

If the commutator has a few windings shorted, clean the commutator then undercut the mika using a broken half of a junior hacksaw blade to clear the segments, weak springs of the brushes could also cause excessive sparking and wear
