Hi

I am in process of installing downlights in my brothers property and he currently has the following already installed:

downstairs front room 12 x 50w downlights
Hallway 4 x 50w downlights

Current lighting circuit mcb is 10 amps.

He now wants the following installed:
kitchen/Dining area (quite large) approx 16 x 50w downlights
Entrance hall 1 x 50w downlight
Downstairs w/c 1 x light fixture (as opposed to downlight)

All downlights mains halogen.

Question is:
As the front room already has 12 x downlights on AND a large number of downlights are now required to be installed for rest of downstairs would it more appropriate to place the new lights on a seperate circuit from the already installed downlights?

Also what is best when it comes to diversity as obviously one switch could in effect be turning on lots of downlights at any one time?

Any helpful information would be much appreciated.

Chris

Nearly two Kilowatts of lighting.....he's going to need air conditioning in summer with that kind of heat load. It's going to be borderline with a 10 Amp circuit. Are the transformers magnetic or electronic?

I have mentioned that it will produce heat as in making the room hot.

Never looked at LED's - will LED's fit exactly like normal downlights, ie, would I be able to simply swap what is already existing there in the front room and do a straight swap?

Sorry Chris I didn't get the meaning of the word 'mains' in your op, it's a word we don't regularly use. You can straight substitute the halogen lamps for LED lamps if they both are 230v. This would make the lamping exercise more expensive but it would keep the heat and the running costs down to well under 10% of the halogens.

Chris I would be advising my brother....................GET SOMETHING DIFFERENT. YOU DON"T NEED 800W OF LIGHTING TO LIGHT A DOMESTIC KITCHEN, SO IT PROVES HOW INEFFICIENT THESE TORCHES ARE AT LIGHTING A SPACE.

Sorry mate but hate these things, they are spotlights and so light a spot, and before someone says that they now have a better deflection angle, they are still spot lights.

I'd be asking him if he wants dimmers, because with that many lights, you'll need to split up the areas to get down to dimmer loads!

i've got 6 in mine, and even now, 737's are diverting from manchester airport, thinking i'm the main runway

Go LED matey, the lamps have come down in price, they save you alot of money in the long run and they last donkey's years aswell, I think the only downside really is you cant dim them...dont hold me to that though.

Lately I've been fitting aurora 981 downlights, they have a nice big 76mm cut out and nice and deep.. I've been putting the 11w CFL lamps in, just as bright as the 50w in my opinion. Less heat and less load on the circuit.. Everyone's a winner.

Thanks little spark. Good point but the drivers I'm considering have a sync and communication between driver function. So (as long as it works)...
