Hi there.
I have just recieved my first tester through the post, its a megger 1552.
I read all the reviews and it seems like a great piece of kit.
But i have just seen on the spec that it is suitable for 16th edition, does anybody know if this will be a problem not being 17th edition or does it still meet all the reqs(got my 17th exam next week and not sure where this fits in)
Thanks again in advance for any help.

All i know is that is probably the best tester on the market for the price IMO. Bar the 1553 but that is debatable ; ) Can't see why it would need to be different for it to be 17th Edition? I'm sure one of the other lads will help more mate.

It fully complies with the 17th edition as do all Megger 16th edition products - so says their technical support people on 10304 502102

Other than not being able to perform a 1/2 times RCD test on both sides of the waveform....

Other than not being able to perform a 1/2 times RCD test on both sides of the waveform....

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings and has been specifically discussed in the JPEL comittee that writes the regs.

To summarise...

A 1/2I test lasts for 2 seconds and during that time, on a 50Hz supply, there are 100 cycles of the mains supply (positive and negative) and the RCD should not trip. So technically speeking it makes no difference at all if this test is started on the positive or negative waveform since the RCD sees many cycles positive and negative.

Trip tests, on the other hand, do require the test to be initiated on positive and negative cycles since the RCD could trip out in a fraction of a cycle, and therefore may only see the positive or negative bit and you need to make sure the trip occurs within the required time in either case. In fact, as you know, we record the worst case condition.

So a tester does not need to do 2 different 1/2 I tests and the Megger MFT's do meet the requirement of the 17th edition

Do you work for Megger? Your post history would suggest so :)
Of course the 1/2 X was a bit tongue in cheek but you can explain why the test leads and croc's supplied with the MFT1552 are such poor quality?

only thing wrong with my 1552 is it won't measure my blood pressure when dealing with Knob head customers
