You don't want to be trying that with one of these then, Tony.
Cuthbert Andrews 60kV insulation test set, originally in a Seeboard HV test van. We haven't fired it up yet, only sensible people will be allowed to play with it.

lucien...i came across one the other week on the boot sale....Back in the good old days when electricity still had some magic in it, you could get 'magneto-electric machines' for curing all diseases known to man and a lot of others besides. Apart from not having a meter and producing spiky AC instead of DC, using one is rather like holding the probes of a Megger and turning the handle. 350V p-p I have measured from one of these - lucky the current is very limited.

hmm....I’m not saying what happened with one of those bloody things other than I was blown out of bed with it!
I wonder how many battery push button IR testers will still be around and working perfectly in 40/50 years time?? Not many i think!!
I'd have no hesitation using any of the 3 or 4 wind-up units i still own (Megger/Metrel/Robin) for testing personal installations. Check 2 of them fairly often against a Megger CM500, in fact i have found the old wind up's, can give a better or should i say, more stable reading in damp conditions....
