does anyone know if there is any chemical reaction with galv conduit within a chemical/battery store? is enamal better

I'd personally go with galv over black, as the enamel bit is stretching the truth a little!

Mind there are other options i would seriously consider also...

i have known galv conduit to corrode in an environment containing diluted hyrochloric acid, it was all replaced with a polymer based product resistant to that particular product, what about stainless?

Never use non-treated metal containment in a Battery room where vented batteries are in use, unless it has been professionally treated. Normally with a PVC over coating, similar to the protection given to the battery racks. Not so sure, where sealed batteries are used, but they are not generally used where bulk continuous charging is used, such as for main switchboard MV/LV DC control requirements. Generally better to use SWA with appropriate glands or other mechanically protected multi core cables.

All battery rooms should have a forced air ventilation system that alleviates to some extent the corrosive and explosive atmospheres, yes battery rooms ,are also in a class of Ex Zone's

You need to use ex fittings in the battery room. Galvanised conduit would be best. Any damage to the galvanising needs touching up along with painting galv on to each joint before assembly.

I don't have anything in battery rooms except for lighting HVAC and alarm system!! Don't have the associated charging equipment in the same room (normally have that in an additional cubical to the main switchboard. Don't have socket outlets or light switches in the rooms either. Walls are normally tiled, or a vinyl covering. Light fittings are normally wall mounted and of the sealed corrosion resistant type, suitable for low end Ex zone.


HVAC , normally a self contained system with extract ducting and vents running the length of the battery racking at high level, against the wall vented to free air with a boost extract fan controlled via alarm system. Cooled air unit mounted at low level, on an outside wall Main system controlled by the charging equipment. All fittings/equipment and exposed grills etc, will also be corrosion resistant. BMS monitoring of battery installation and all associated equipment.

Yes you can get away with far less, but more is always better and safer than less!!
