Never use non-treated metal containment in a Battery room where vented batteries are in use, unless it has been professionally treated. Normally with a PVC over coating, similar to the protection given to the battery racks. Not so sure, where sealed batteries are used, but they are not generally used where bulk continuous charging is used, such as for main switchboard MV/LV DC control requirements. Generally better to use SWA with appropriate glands or other mechanically protected multi core cables.
All battery rooms should have a forced air ventilation system that alleviates to some extent the corrosive and explosive atmospheres, yes battery rooms ,are also in a class of Ex Zone's
