metal studs

i want advice for about metal studs..im asking to wiring a new house with two floors..all wall site and partition it with metal studs and plasterboard..metal studs have own hole for cable to go throught..on some part i open other hole ..when i finish first fix person on the charge ( calling himself manager ) ask me to grommet all hole when the cable going throught metal studs because its on building regulation and have to meet 17th edition criteria ..its any specific requirements on the building regulation or 17th edition wiring regulation who ask me do to that...please help asap...

There would be quite a few regs that could appertain to this

522.8.1 concerning damaging sheath of cable during installation

522.8.12 concerning cables not being damaged while means of fixing

522.8.13 concerning cables not being damaged by sharp edges

And the list could go on.

personaly I hate this stuff as it not only cuts cableing due to it being sharp but fingers also get a right good shredding Even worse when they use the black jack screws

Or, .... You could just sum up all the relavent regulations and call it, ...Using your COMMONSENSE!!

Do you honestly think you'll get anyone here supporting your stand, of not grommeting holes through metal stud work??

really its common-sense..some hole its more than 50mm and no sharp because its made for cable..but my question its if im forced to do that or advised to do that..and if its any specified for metal stud...

Do what the boss says , life will be easier.
But i know what you mean about the metal studs - the cable holes have a rounded lip that wont damage the cables and dont really need any edging grommets.

hmm, if the holes are chamfered, like a bigger version of light switch boxes, there's no requirement to grommet. all circuits must, however , be RCD protected. (522.6.8)

we do alot of newbuild with studs too in one block of apartments i grommeted the studs and brought cables through but they pull out i used 25mm female adapters in the end alot better to work with and look the part, or just use the holes they have put in the stud cause thats what its for.
the guy is right to ask you to grommet holes its cable protection!

grommet strip or as the more mature members will no doubt agree Make your own strip using TWE sheathing for the bigger holes a wee bit of tape to hold securley
even the weight of a couple of twes bearing down on these holes can cut through sheathing and insullation

The bigger holes are machined and not sharp maybe grommet strip or as you say T&E grey sheathing if hes got to keep boss happy

thank you all for you help..i know the best way its to grommet or edge protected all holes on metal stud to avoid any cable damages ..the person who call himself manager its not qualified person but all time say i know building and wiring regulation ..i thought he dont know nothing for wiring regulation..i ask you to be 100% sure its not any specified requirement and when i say to him im not doing what you say i want to be 100% sure hi cant show to me any specific requirement for studs..did you catch what i mean...
