I was replacing some sockets today to metal face plates for customer in their extension. Lights have also metal face plates, and these are earthed. They bought some more metal switches to replace the ones in original house but I found out there is no earth in this part. I believe they can't have metal switches without earth and advised this, but they are not convinced. Does anyone know if there's a reg number I can show them as my reg book got pinched and waiting for new one. Thanks all.

loads of threads on this subject. jf they have plastic switches with no cpc, they must NOT be replaced with metal ones. end of.

411.3.1.1 a protective conductor must be run to every wiring point in the installation and every accessory, and all exposed conductive parts must be earthed.

However I am not sure how you are going to show them if you have no regs book.

The point is if the metal becomes live it does not kill you, it automatically disconnects instead.

Dillb sorry to swerve the thread but just to let you know I have nominated you to choose tomorrow's winning number on the prize draw.

If you want you can demonstrate the potential harm to the customer, one probe in their left hand, metal switch in their right. A croc on the switch and whack 500v through them.
They'll get the message :)

Thanks for the replies. Thought I was right, I'll just put them straight.

Come on Dillb, give us a clue, what number you thinking of for tomorrow, and what's the prize ?

Put one of the switch screws through the live cable and let the customer decide for himself

just connect the switch L to the earth terminal, then tell them to switch the light on.

As well as explaining the regulations to them maybe you could also explain the reason why the metal switches come with an earth terminal. Also show them a plastic switch and explain why this one has no earth terminal.
