I had a "chat" with Metrel at Elex Sandown Park.

Even though they have relocated their sales office to Surrey they have no plans to have any service people down "south" nor do they plan to all any "authorised" dealers to do upgrades and repairs. They think we can all send our products in for 2 weeks at a time! This is simply not an option for me as I'm SE and can't be without my tester for 1 week, let alone 2!

When my Metrel needs replacing I will be looking for a more flexible "company".

I'm not sure they are even as cheap as they used to be anymore in comparison to others. That was a major selling point for me.

These manufacturers think they have you by the goolies and you will pay their high costs.... I was quite impressed by the conversation I had with the Kewtech guys.........

DISCLAIMER: This process is low level and any mistakes could potentially brick the MFT. It is a fair straight forward process with these instructions, but just know that you try this at your own risk.

Good luck.

Yep, just bricked my tester! Oh well it was due a calibration in any case!:-(

Having spoken to Metrel today they will upgrade the firmware free of charge in their testers, you may encounter problems depending on which USB to R32 connector you use.

You can get cheap USB to RS232 adaptors on amazon £2 or you can get more expensive ones from test meter suppliers such as tester .co.uk under pat test accessories £11, you would need an RS232 cable as well.

I didn't have any luck trying to upgrade mine, it seemed to be a communication error, I suspect it was because I was using windows 10 (I tried on two computers - a laptop with a usb/serial adapter lead and a desktop with serial port), but before I got round to trying it on a XP computer it was due for calibration and it was upgraded (free!) as part of the calibration by test-meter.co.uk (the forum sponsor).
