Hello all,

Im doing a college assignment and Im being asked to give advantages and disadvantages of MICC with and WITHOUT Pvc sheathing..

Im not used to the cable at all if im honest so ive done some research but can find very little on non pvc insulated pyro.

Can anyone point me in the direction of such a thing so I can get my answer??

Thank you in advance

K

I am not sure what information you need about the cable, these are two data sheets from manufacturers but the specifications will vary little from the PVC/LSF/etc coated MICC.
The primary difference is the temperature of operation of the cable as there is no plastic to melt.

The cable below the pvc covering is identical. The only advantage is you can tell by the colour what type of installation it is. (Red for fire alarm, for example)

Disadvantages. Diameter of cable is larger, so when theres a lot of them, it takes up more space on the wall, or on tray or whatever. Holes in walls need to be bigger.

Either way, its awful stuff to work with. You look like a ghost spending a day terminating a few dozen cables.

Best cable I ever worked with, it was the type of installations that you took pride in, done proprly a joy to work with, yes it could prove difficult at times especially the larger stuff, my very first dat as an Apprentice was polishing a big distribution board, with loads of MICC going in at the top with bundle of Steel Wool.

Oh yes... when done right it looks good.
Same type of job. The apprentices, me included, were tasked with making off all the ends at a panel in a big council building.
All power, lighting, fire alarm were in MICC and came into one plant room. We had to strip down over a metre of each cable.
The floor was covered in white powder. We could have bagged it up and sold it on street corner

I know a stately home that uses unsheathed MICC for its outside lights just for the reason that it blends in with the building.

Thank you all for your replies. I’ve found that the actual difference is that yes the pvc provides a colour difference for aesthetic purposes and also an insulator for potential touching cables when in close contact.

We do use micc in college practicals however it’s been superceeded by fp.

Good to know how to use it though!!

Thank you all for your replies.

The sheath isn’t rated or tested to provide any level of insulation and I can’t see why it would need to do this as the sheath is earthed.

It hasn’t been superceeded by the FP series of cables, they are different cables which can be used in some of the applications where MICC used to be the only choice.
