You can tell what they are from the size of the poo. A cat or a trap dont use poison as they will die somewhere and leave a horrible smell and you may never find where it is. They can get in through small holes, if you can put a pencil in it they can fit through it. Will be the cold weather driving them in, im in the process of stipping out all the old loft insulation and there are hundreds of little mice nests in it and tonnes of poo too (not found any mice yet though)

The rat mess is up to about half an inch in length , mouse droppings are more prolific and about the size of rice grains.
Rats will take and store the food , thats why there are no wrappers, mice will too , but size is more of a problem for them.
Me being a soft git I think poison is barbaric. I have used the sonic devices and they have worked. It is very difficult to keep them out, as has been said secure storage of food helps, like biscuit tins and bread bins.
The poor little bu**-rs are just cold and hungry, hard life innit.

Just bought one of those ultrasonic things and a pack of 12 humane traps online should be here tomorrow...

Can they really fit through a hole the size of a pencil?!

Look at a babies head and your lasses clunge and then ask me that question again.... there are many deceptive things in this world!... PS the size of their skull determines the fixed apparture they can squeeze through....the mice that is.

I was told by a rentokil bloke that if you have a hole that they keep coming through , fill it with wire wool and it will stop them dead .
He reckoned that they can not stand chewing the stuff .

Also if you do poison them , go for the solid type bait . If you have mice and use the loose grain type the little ferkers will eat out the centre and leave the poison coated husk .

Generally if you have one you will not get the other as they do not seem to cohabit very well .

I know this doesn't sound right but don't use mouse poison(typically brown pellets) as this is pretty ineffective against mice. Use the blue pellets marked for rats or sometimes rats/mice depending on who you get it from. You will need to leave little trays dotted around, and keep refilling the ones they use. And expect poison all over the floor around this area.

There's only really one solution get into splintercell mode, night vision goggles, pcp rifle, sit in a corner and wait for the little fookers to appear, then take them out one at a time. You get rid of the mice and get to play at being sam fisher for the night, double result.

Funny enough there is a lot of truth in that . Rats hate being harassed , especially shot at lol, they are clever , strange creatures and move on en- masse when it suits them.

Expandable foam in every gap you can find.....poison leaves dead mice where you can`t find them. Good old fashioned traps, which bacon rye of peanut butter....Kill em, bin em...only way.

The smell of rars and mice is unmistakable , it's got to be one of the worst smells to get rid of.

Be sure to leave natural ventilation under the house IE replace broken air bricks, do not block off of the wood rot to follow will cost alot more than the rodent issue.

Have a look at the back of your fridge (where the compressor is) they love it there its warm dark and they havea plentiful supply of water (from the auto defrost water that collects on top of the compressor)
got a photo of one that we caught in my daughter house was a crafty one it emptied the traps 3 times will upload it when i find it

my daughter noticed the mess in the kitchen and blamed her kids at first used bacon rind tied to trap laced with peanut butter eventually both traps got it at once

You can buy a plug in thing that emits an ultrasonic signal that we can't hear but the mice and rats can and they hate it so much they'll foff.
I think Wilkos do them.

............ or you can have a Stafffie Pikey girl who can make kebabs, rissoles and curry with them.

Her Road Kill Risotto is just sublime!!

When we had a clatter of the buggers, tried everything but the best thing was that we found the old fashioned mouse traps (wooden with little pin holding the bar back) got them from local hardware shop, selling them 2 for 99p.

Find where you think they might be coming from, peanut butter worked best for us, but found sometimes they were able to lick it off and not set the trap off! As inhumane as it sounds, a little loose thread around the trigger over the peanut butter soon worked a treat (they got caught in it.)

Good luck.

Mice also like Mars bars. Bacon fat but as said above, the thread has to be there otherwise they'll just take the mick out of you.

Soak some raisins in rum and leave them in a saucer for them.
They'll eat them and get rattarsed!!
When you get up in the morning they'll be asleep around the saucer so you pick them up and relocate them a couple of hundred yards away from your house.
When they wake up they'll be too hungover to find their way back.
Jobs a good un!
