Employers shouldn't enjoy more favourable rules than employees. Either everyone can use a phone or no-one can.

It's not a case of favourable rules, you're being paid to work, not chat to your friends on the phone or arrange private jobs in the firms time.

I work on sites where it seems that it's a human right to talk on the phone, twenty or so minutes a day on the phone (and it's normally a lot more) adds up to a couple of hours a week. I wonder what you would say if your boss took £30.00 off you every. That's what is happening to him by workers not doing their hours yet still claiming there full weeks money.

This is proberly the reason for some big sites banning phones, not health and safety.

so what if its your clients ringing u up while your on site and most sparks put in more than there day moneys worth i know i do so if my clients ring me in the day im inclined to pick it up as are you we are self employed remember your argument stands if someone aint pulling there weight i agree with you there

I am self employed and I do answer my phone when it rings (the effing thing dose'nt seem to stop) I'm just putting forward a point of view, I have no problem with the lad who works for me using his phone at all, he does his days work and the phone dosent seem to get in the way.
I'm talking about what I see on site, it's normally the lads on the cards who seem to spend the day trying very hard to do as little as possible. They seem to have the opinion that they have a right to talk all day on the phone.

well thats the joy of being on the cards these days you spend as much time as u can doing nothing because you can get away with it not that thats my point of view of course but there all at it

Im self employed the jobs have usually been priced for so any time i spend on the phone to another client is only at my expense i will agree with phones not been used for general textin and chit-chat but money has to be earned and ignoring clients on phones can be costly

It seems this is big grey area. Personally when my phone rings on site its a pain as i`m trying to work but if i didn`t answer it i wouldn`t have much work. Vicious circle i think. Using the phone for non work related matters on site really ***** me off though.:mad:. Dedicated mobile phone zones i think would only encourage people to use them on sites. I agree foremen/chargehands etc should have access to phones on site as well as the self employed.

Unfortunately the reality is thats the times we live in and we have to live with mobile phones no matter how we survived before them. Try turning off your running water and electric at your house for a weekend and try to live like people used to. Wouldn`t happen so complaining about phones being invented is a bit off in my opinion.

is there any guidance on walkie talkies as thats the main reason I use a mobile on site.

No body will tell me inc. the HSE to stop using my mobile on site its all about moderation if someone hasn't got the balls to tell an employee/apprentice to stop texting and talking to mates while on the companies time then you deserve these rules and regs.

Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obidience of fools

I think the point being made orignally was that it was the HSE banning mobiles. if sites ban them and you know that when you start a contract then so what.

True Sparks, but I was not responding to the op but was commenting on the post by Risteard about favouring employers over employees.
The point I was trying to make (obviously not very well judging by some of the responses) was that an employee or sub contractor chatting on a phone earns no money.

And also the HSE have not banned mobile from building sites.

No worries then. What really peas me off if the amount of texts that go backwards and forwards, evern worse when you are on a beach on your holidays

As my user name suggests I may sound like an old fart but should we ban mobiles on construction site you damm sure we should why because its just plain dangerous and it is bad as (I have witnessed) people of all ages texting whilst doing over 50mph on the motorway.

The problem we have is that some people think they cannot live without their phone and are no more than slaves / addicts to a small package of electronics you only have to witness this in your local cinima where the minute the credits roll the slave/addicts panic to get a good signal in case they are missing something mind as one little girl said daddy look at fireflys ??.

No I am not a grumpy old man but this problem does need addressed as safety is what it is all about watching a mother with 2 kids under 5 in the back trying to navigate around a roundabout with a Starbucks in one hand and a mobile stuck to her ear fills me with dread

Yes I know its against the law to use your mobile whilst driving but by hitting people with more fines is no bad thing if it saves someones family getting wiped out just because the offender got a funny text and felt they had to share it with all their pals.
