So what are you suggesting people without a job actually do??

Sit at home watching the bills pile up waiting for the perfect job with high morals??

Sorry to be a bit sarcastic but the country being a state is big Gordans fault, not the fault of employers. I agree it is absolutely bull**** what some companies are offering, but trainees arent to blame.

i agree if someone needs the work then they should take it
all im saying is it is a sorry state that the pay is far below what it should be

"things can only get better"

as said by labour when blair got in

Fair one mate the OP is a trainee so assumed thats where it came from sorry. Seriously tho just cant see the logic in turnin down a chance 2 further your career when the other option is the being out of work.

No worries. If it was a back hander for four days it might be worth it but a permanent job no way.

My mate is just doing his level 2, he came out with me last week to help out. We took down 7 high bay sodiums and put up 7 T5 units. 11am til 5.30pm. I paid him £100.

Tell him to stick it mate...;)

these sorts of rates of pay scare the **** out of me
how is a spark who has been on jib rate or similar for the last god knows how long meant to now survive on 6-7 quid an hour
people are getting turned over and there is nothing they can do:mad::mad::mad:

And some people say that the JIB is S*** but at least they state you a decent rate of pay per hour than £6-7 an hour as a spark.

the jib are a bit soft at the mo as they have allowed employers to decide about the jan 10 rise locally
some people are worried that this could make them weak with regards to future deals

we are not getting our jan rise and i fully understand why i just hope the employers honor the future rises as soon as they can and dont use this 2010 issue to have us over a barrel

I have been at this game for 18 years on jib approved rate for 11 years so £5.80 an hr doing a non skilled job was a big come down for me but anyone taking people on locally are not paying much better than what im on now because they know someone will work for that kind of money. I can understand firms not giving the next pay rise but alot of firms are just taking advantage.

Right can of worms I've opened up hey?

It was just 4 days, nothing permanent PAYE, but the fact that I was being asked to do min 8-10hrs connecting up for that rate is nothing short of an insult! If others are quite happy to take that as there's little else then you'll always be taking that rate. I can't see when things begin to move that the employer's mindset on wages will shift with it? That job must have no real price on it if he can't pay a decent day rate for a Mate? I'm not being greedy, ungrateful or unrealistic. I'm not going to swan up with my hands in my pockets, smoke breaks every 10 Mins (I don't smoke!), chatting on the phone to my mates...I'm there to work.

End of the day it's always each to their own circumstances, but I've trained out of another poor trade (albeitly better pay than £6 P/H) to do this. 2.5yrs of college, best part of 2.5k in fees to see that I'm now only worth £40 per day!!

Sorry lads but you may as well kick it into touch & look elsewhere. Why, when we are being asked to take responsibility to ensure we are not working dangerously which can have severe consequences to lives (my own & others) be asked to do it for this rate?

Tesco.com anybody??

Yeah sort of see where you're comin from claret, but my point is you're gonna get more out of it than just 40 quid don't you think?

Let's say you get a job interview for the same kind of work down the line. As im sure most sparks would agree, EXPERIENCE is everything in this game. They ask you if you have any, and after a little bit of "creative" thinking you say three months and blag a load of stuff about it.

The next guy in has no experience and doesn't even get a look in. See wot I mean.

Certainly not gettin at ya mate. Im 26, half way through level 3, and not earnin amassive amount myself so this thread is kind of close 2 my heart. Im also one of about 5 lads at the college out of 50 odd who are employed in the trade.

Fair one £6 to a spark is a disgrace. But I reckon mates and apprentices should be takin every chance they can.

All this over 4 days hey!!

Stu

There is an old saying half a slice is better than no slice and as the other guy says put it down as an experiance i worked for nothing when i started 30 years ago just to get my foot on the ladder after two weeks the contractor felt so bad he started to pay me he was a great sparks but i had to prove myself

4 years ago I moved to Stoke from SW London ..... don't ask why, I've yet to work it out :) Anyway, wife became ill and savings acting like the banks before even the banks got their act together! I was out of work looking for something to help when along came this company who paid me a trifling amount for my services + transit + my own power tools ...... but at the end of the day, it gave me a small amount of money and in 6 months (6 months of bleeding Charity ) I got to know Stoke reasonably well and even better I was away from the depressing situation at home .... So you see Claret, it's not the money, it's the satisfaction, however seemingly small, that you are learning to cope. Ignore the dilemma, stuff the frustration ... you never know what working in that place might offer. You just have to assume that the experience will be worthwhile and even if nothing comes of it you will be able to look back on it and remember that just occasionally life is a bit tough ..... without the knocks you cannot appreciate the good bits.

Sorry for the Sermon, but I've been where you are many times, and if nothing else you make sure you gain from the experience.

Put it another way, £200 quid is a lot better than the frustration of the "customer" who owes you money and you know you have no chance of ever getting it!

Claret, be cheerful, you just got to be positive.........

Regards,

Stewart
