I'm building a new head for a milling machine using a three phase motor and VFD.
VFD's seem to be much cheaper for 230v rather than 400v, is there any disadvantage to running a motor at 230v TP than 400v TP?

I have a 400v three phase supply.

Thanks,

OP has said he using a VFD so he has a choice of converting (1ph230v to 3ph 230v) or (3ph 400 in and out)....

What Beseoker might be getting at is what would be your current demand on the 1ph supply to 3ph 230v to do the same job to run the same motor instead of a 3ph supply 400v... ?

Yes VFD :)

I'm meaning more in terms of power output from the motor, would the torque be the same?
I'd be saving around ÂŁ60 to use a 230v single phase to 230v TP VFD. Plus whatever saving on isolators / safety switching gear etc.

From the OP:

230v TP than 400v TP
No mention of single phase.

He said VFD so in the context of his post I would suggest these are the drive outputs as these are the common values, to nitpick 230v input 3ph is not available (without some form of TX) is going off on a pointless tangent because to me at least the OP didn't mean this.

Ive re-read the OP who clearly says the use of a VFD hence Im confused why you asked where he was getting 230v 3PH from.... its clear that the VFD provides this.
