Hi, I,m thinking of taking on work that entails lots of 3 phase motor overhauls plus other maintenance and installation work.
Have never overhauled motors before and just wandering if it,s reasonably straightforward after doing a few ?

If it,s basic squirrel cage motors, there is NO problem overhauling them, do not let anyone put you off this type of work.
These motors are very simple, basically change the bearings and seals. Only electrical work required is testing of the stator winding, and once you,ve been shown how easy that is, you,ll never look back! There,s not much work about, go for it.

Depends what you intend to acheive here if you are identifying motor failures, causes and solutions this alone is a large field even when limited to specific motor types, if you are just over-hauling, rewinding the motors regardless of cause then a much smaller learning curve, dont forget with motors comes a whole century of previous designs and sizes dont expect to get to grips with a modern squirrel cage motor with its standardised frame, shaft, bearing etc and be fluent in the job as all it takes is a previous generation motor to come through the door and your stumped...

Im not trying to disuade you here just giving heads up its a steep learning curve which never really ends.

No doubt Darkwood that investigating why a motor failed is more difficult that merely overhauling it, but if the OP gets involved with that also, it will be to his benefit in the long term, only by doing a thing do you learn ! The main point I,m making to him is that 3-phase motors, particularly squirrel cage ones are not as difficult as maybe some would believe. The whole electrical field is a steep learning curve that never really ends Lol

Do you know the basics of operation and construction?

Reply to the PM I've sent you.
Sorry pretty new to forum, what is a PM ?
When you replied earlier, and advised "Start thinking of something else to do" my first thought was "what an arrogant reply" to a reasonable post. Maybe just me,although others seemed to think squirrel cage motors are not so taboo. !

"Do you know the basics of operation and construction" Give the OP a break.
A squirrel cage motor IS a Very basic machine. Basically a Stator/Rotor and a couple of bearings. I,ve overhauled probably thousands of them over 30yrs and diagnosed failures in hundreds. Don,t tell us it,s a complex subject.
The guy is looking for a bit of honest advice.nothing more. DON,T put him off.

At the top of the page there is an orange bar.
Just below that in the Blue bar the is a button "Private Mesages" click on that.

A squirel cage motor is fairly simple but like everything there's exceplions to the rule. Break those rules and you're going to be paying for a new motor.

Check the PM.

Despite some peoples image of me I'm not a two headed monster that goes around biting childrens heads off.
