im called to move one house consumer unit..consumer unit need to move about 6-8m from the original position..problem its that cable its short..im asking if i can extend cable using crimping tools.. it is permissible to extend cable ..any one have same problem on her jobs..another problem its 10 MI cable..i dont have any experience on extend MI cable..that cable i have to join on FP200...the position where i have to extend cable have to boxed up..should i say to builders to live axes or its not necessary ...what your can do if you are on same position ...

is there a reason for the move, eg door way? if not you could put up an adaptable box and gland to that and join the rest of the cables in it.
however if you have no experience in pryo, maybe take this one on the chin and pass it on.

Are you an electrician mate? An electrician would know whether extending meter tails this distance is permissible or not and would know how to do it safely and within the constraints of BS7671. He/she would also know how to extend MICC.
The bottom line here is if you don't know how to do it you can't guarantee you're going to do it safely.

I'm just surpised there's pyro in a domestic.

I have no idea how to or indeed wish to extend pyro either, and yes I am a Electrician I just hate the stuff it's satans work and no mistake,
plus the kits to dear for the amount I would come across, maybe twice in the last year

I'm very confused by this bit!

You hate the stuff because you've never been trained in the art of MICC work!! Which then brings into question if indeed you are an electrician!! ...lol!! I bet that you don't like metallic conduit/trunking work either, and probably for exactly the same reason....

As Trev1 has correctly stated, get it right (know what your doing) and it's great stuff!! There is no other wiring system to touch it in terms of impunity to environmental conditions and it's longevity, to name just 2 of Many,Many advantages MICC can give to an installation!!!

i have to admit that my experience of micc is limited. i can use it, but i'm slow stripping and terminating the stuff. just that all my working life, haven't been called to do much of it. love the steel conduit and trunking, however, learnt trunking the hard way under a tight fisted boss who wouldn't buy bends. all were formed on site using hacksaws and protractors.

If your extending 6-8M remember its over 3M so you need an isolating switch in the tails.
Look lads dont jump down his throat, ive not touched MI cable since collage and wouldnt be too comfortable in extending it either.
Id come to the more experienced Sparks here and ask for a hand. Maybe some of younger guys havdnt dealt with it as much due to how little its used nowadays. Give a guy a chance. :)

thank you to all..i asking for advice not for joke ..sure im full qualified electrician and i fix new and replace many consumer unit..but to be honest never on this way..i cant remember from the college if i learn for cable extending ..all the time i avoid extend the cable or i use crimping tools if i not have any choice..its not problem for meter tails because feed its with 16mm SWA cable and i can replace..problem its MICC cable..i never use MICC on my life..

Why have you taken this work on then, if you know that you do not possess the skills to undertake this work successfully and safety?? If you don't know, you don't know, so pass this job onto someone that does know. Perhaps you can watch and learn a little too!!
