Moving a bedroom light

I am about to move into a flat with loft access. The light in one of the bedrooms is about 2 foot away from the window. Ideally, I'd like to move the light to the center of the room.

If the cable needs to be longer in order to move the light can I use a terminal block to extend the cable or not?

connections must be enclosed in a suitable junction box. if there's only 1 cable, it's a simple task. however, depending on how the circuit is wired, there could be 2 or 3. this is where you'd be advised to call a local spark. it's only an hour's work at most.

Just out of interest, the reason why light were placed nearer the window was cause curtains were thinner and the light nearer the window casted less of an image when looking from outside.

Don't go poking your fingers under the insulation, trying to find the light fitting, without the electrics for the light off.

How old is the property (light close to window tends to be older properties)?

Apart from it being likely there are 2 or 3 cables, you need to be sure there is an earth present if the new fitting is going to be class I metal. Older wiring might not include an earth.

its over 50 years old was built-in 1940's

"Move in to a flat" would suggest you are or about to be the tenant, not owner. May be wise to check with landlord first as most aren't keen on non registered electricians (or tenants) working on the properties they own. If they are happy for it to be moved then get a electrician in to move it. An hour or two should be all that's needed.

Well in that case get a spark in to move it to where you like, best option would be to get some nice down light fitted.

If your buying it try to get an electrical installation certificate or electrical installation condition report from the seller.

Out of interest, the houses on our estate were built in the mid to late 1970s and they also have bedroom ceiling roses near the window. It really put a damper on my 'shadow antics' when we moved in.

I meant who would put it that close to the wall, rather than that close to the window.

Downlights in a bedroom not good. Lying in bed looking up at a downlight is not nice.

RE, electrical installation report. Normally surveys are up to the buyer to obtain.
