How ply-able is the main incoming cable to the head in a house? Myself and my dad moved one 2 meters once and if i remember correctly the outer sheath was lead but this was under floorboards where as the one im asking about is concreted in so will need to be gunned up........anyway a job has come up which i am going to look at at 11am this morning with my father inlaw and where the ccu, meter and head are situated in an understair cupboard the lady wants to put a door so the afore mention ccu, meter and head need to be repositioned to allow for said door.

Hi

You are on a sticky wicket if you move the incoming head without the authority of the Power company and if anything should go wrong then the HSE will come down on you like a ton of bricks. What you have to remember the fuse on the end of the cable head is usually 500 amp so there will be little or no chance of it blowing should something go wrong it will just blow up in your face causing catastrophic injuries so in short I would not be doing this job I would get the electrical power company to get it moved.

there is usually a lot of slack on the incoming cable and so the service head can be moved around a bit, however this is dno work and you are working with live incomers, highly dangerous and highly illegal.....

It also makes me wonder why an arms member would ask a question like this in a general forum.

ok agreed, the question was worded incorrectly

I know the implications but was looking for an alternative also am i correct in thinking that it would cost the tennent around 5-600 for edf to come out and move it?

if its paper lead cable even the DNO would normally cut the cable outside the property before moving it. they may move it live if it is a modern hybrid but some would still cut it before moving it.

Went to look at the job and it is paper lead cable so have informed her that her supplier will need to come in and move the head and surprisingly enough after explaining the implications of myself trying to move it and how much it could cost her for her supplier to simply move the head and nothing more she was ok with it and didnt suffer from an exceptional case of sudden asthma so the job will go ahead all legal and above board as should be

Not to imply that it would have gone any other way if she hadnt agreed it simply wouldnt have happened

I had a supply moved last week by supply authority and it cost ÂŁ400 only moved 3 mtrs, they were only there about 30 mins!!
I think it is a rip off, as no one else can price to do it! So you have no choice but to pay the fee to get it done!!

Slightly off topic but if a customer wanted a gas meter moving I have the number of a nice chap who will move/connect for 250 quid.

He works for one of the Gas contracting companies and does it on the side. Makes you chuckle though. Hes been doing it for as long as hes done it for a living a never had any comebacks from anyone.

I wonder if there are any 'bent' DNO workers out there doing the same?

used to know one but he blew himself away, moving an old dangerous incomer. his last words were " bugger it , tomorrow's sunday, double time"
