Hi all just had a call off a potential customer. She has her ccu in the lounge on the wall and she wants it moving to the outside of the house and put in as she says one of those white boxes. I have only ever moved or installed new ccu s with in 1m of the meter and cut out so not to sure about the procedure. I have not seen the ccu or meter arrangement yet, but have told her that i can not move the incoming supply or meter so if these need moving then it is a job for her electrical supplier. I have told her that i will have a look and see if i can give her some advice and tell her what i can and can not do. has anyone else come across a job like this and if so give me some advice. obviously not seen job yet so dont know all the details. Cheers:confused:

not seen a consumer unit in one of the white boxes outside and not read about them in osg or bs7671 reg book. can the ccu only be moved to an internal location? if so she will have to get the DNO meter and cutout moved by supplier. thanks for your prompt reply.

Very often the customers can have these little fads and ideas but are very often totaly unaware of the work involved or as is often the case the cost. Supply authorities often have one guy for the cable and cut out, another for the meter. (Of course they both come out on the same day, and within a few hours of each other) Yea Right ! :D.
Put her wise mate and be sure its really a road she wants to go down, she could end up days without power I have seen it happen.

Also, Consumer units typically need to be within 2m of the electricity meter unless an additional switch fuse is fitted to protect the tails. They should not be mounted on the electricity suppliers meter board (although this is quite often seen). An ideal location should also make access to the CU easy without need to resort to ladders or climbing past obstructions - since you may be doing it in the dark.

Hope this helps.

Yea i know what you mean, i dont fancy the hassle myself but said i would have a look due to my adverts in the local paper which says free quotes and advice. I may need to reword my ad as some one may ask for advice on their choice of wall paper.

Depends who they get their electricity from, if they get it from a different person than the DNO the meter is the responsibility of the supplier and not the DNO which will cause even more probs.
