Mr Electric

Hi all,

I stumbled accross this clip while looking at some electrical bits on you tube :-
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txwvLMc7X54]YouTube - Mr Electric Domestic Electrician[/ame]

Lol, is it me or are the procedures they expect you to go through just a little bit over the top !!
I dont mean to offend anyone who has a Mr Electric franchise, but i personally would feel like a right prat going through that routine every time i went into a customers house !!

What do you lot think ?

I work as a field engineer in the IT industry and my theory is that with "Mr Electric" like PC World's "Geek squad", the aim is to disarm the customers sense of being overpriced or conned by simply having the company set out to make you look as simple and as stupidly benign as possible: Bright coloured van, shirt and tie (good for office, not for sparking FFS), poncey rituals (doormat / shoecovers) and an absurdly patronizing american name that gives older people a false sense of security.

Imagine telling a girl in a bar you work for "Geek Squad"? She'll pour her drink over you.

wondered when this would re-surface...!!

i cant mention to much as remember what happened last time i got threatened with court action..! tut tut,

any way MR ELECTRIC last time i smelt it was reaking of Bull Droppings..!!

i never got issued a MAT well i dont think i did as i never used it! also my shirt was horrendous and made me sweat like a sewer rat on bin day...! i wore a red Polo Shirt as most my jobs bar 2 were HOMESERVE insurance jobs! it had Mr electric and Homeserve logos on it!

my diagnostic tool bag had been pillaged by the previous employee and i had to make do with my VDE set and Higher quality tools i bought my self..! (dont really want to die with cheap stuff)

my van was red as it was graphic up with home serve stuff and only a tiny Mr Electric Graphic on door!
the yellow vans (bannana vans) look stupid :) and i belive the true colour of one van was metalic blue! lol but it got vinyl wrapped for about 2k!!

mr electric franchises dont really make any money from the brand! well not my outfit i worked for! it was mainly insurance work via home serve and if you had the chance to sell a job while there than happy days but like i said bread and butter was home serve!!

think i sold 7 private jobs or somit compared to 80 or so home serve call outs!!

blue over shoes!! what are they! never got issued and i looked a pratt with that big Sales "MENU"

sory for rambling on but as mentioned before each franchise is different..! couple of good sparks still work for Tees Valley outfit but they only there due to poor job availability in hard times..! :(

sorry if its not the usual outburst but check my post in sparky pub for latest Mr electric ccok ups..!! :):)

I wore those blue things, i looked a right tw@. Never got a mat though.

I think i still have there price folder in my garage somewhere...

No one likes me putting my Colostomy bag on their floorAND ive got my own Mat....

This further Education they give the customer,is that while the hourly rate meter is still running, like in a Black Cab,when youre telling the EXPERIENCED driver how to get there!!!!

If you want to know the truth about this or any franchise call a few depots. Always going to be some going bust and some raking it in. Somewhere in the middle the truth lies.

I used to work for the one in Reading them the work was half on the Homeserve and British gas contracts for domestics ! work was ok with the odd commercial/industrial jobs ! i didnt have a problem doing the latter for the charges but going to customers homes and working for £10 per hr and them charging £78 per hr seemed to much considering my last job domestic was to a faulty smoke ! job sheet said replace batt and hover sensor on inspection the smoke needed replacing that was a basic £20 mains smoke so needed a revisit and the customer would be charged £78 callout with another £78 revisit plus the cost of their smoke so not much change from £200 ! which isnt alot to the rich and famous but an old lady !

It makes you wonder how they get away with it, considering other customers will expect a consumer unit change done for £100 based on the price they can pick one up for in B&Q.

Maybe we should all have a go at "Mr Electric theatre" because that's basically what it is - the customers seem to love seeing the mat rolled out, the tie and ID badge, official looking clipboard, then you clean their house afterwards but charge them £78/hr for it.

It's like cocktails - where I come from a rum and coke is called a rum and coke and you could expect to pay around £4.50 for a double in a pub (which is expensive given that buying the ingredients in the supermarket costs about £1.50), but go to some of the swanky cocktail bars down town and they stick a wedge of lime in the top, call it a 'Cuba Libre' and get away with charging about £6.50. That's a markup of 333%.
