Just an observation.

Staircase serving 5 storeys….. how to turn on the light from any floor?

See saw type rocker switch set into the ceiling and two really long bits of rope.

I thought it was a pulley system for the servants of old to take heavy objects up to the guest bedrooms…. So I pulled a rope, and the light came on.

And yes…. I know it can be done with quinetic nowadays.

We all love stuff like this and the fact it, I assume still works. Quinetic switches due to failure will be replaced or ditched in a short matter of time.
Do you mean Kinetic ? Quinetic is a make Kinetic is the system.

I think it is fantastic,
if it ever goes wrong then it needs to be replaced with a good quality 2 way rocker switch so the original design is kept. (Even if rocker arms have to be custom manufactured)
it would be insulting to most engineers to replace that with disposable electronic rubbish .

I believe it could be a safety concern.
When I was a kid, I would be thinking of swinging on that.

I do hope you are not being serious.

if you decide to swing on a cord at the top of a 3 story staircase by climbing over the banister or other barriers in the way,
Darwin has already decided that it is possibly best for you to be removed from the gene pool for the greater good of humanity.

Most clever kids would swing on the bottom of a rope, not the top, as you somewhat lose the swinging effect.

I've not been up to the top floor yet... but i'll take another photo when i do.

I don't think this switch will ever wear out. It hasn't yet, and it's possibly been up there for 50 + years already.

I do have a job for kenetic/quinetic in this house. There's a labyrinth of corridors and rooms on the basement floor not used for public viewing... and the switches for the long corridors are in the middle. Have to walk half way in the dark to find them.

In addition to Brians post above you can get electronic impulse relays, so no thud as they switch in and out.
