Eek, a couple of rookie mistakes but every day is a school day Daz. Hope your tester survived.
 
Yeah, if the fault current was big enough to leave visible char damage on the tester then probably better to replace it entirely. Looking on the bright side, at least that tester is only about 30 quids worth and not some all singing and dancing MFT.
