MWC or EIC

Is it me or is all this paperwork getting to you too?

Doing a small bathroom job today and as there is no RCD protection I'm changing the MCB to a RCBO.

Can I use a MWC or do I have to do an EIC??

But does it HAVE to be. I'm now using PIRform and the MWC's cover the aspects of the circuit I need to confirm/check and the EIC's are far more involved to complete!

I suppose it's always as normal in the regs down to interpretation but in the notes for a MEIWC it does say

but not for replacement of distribution boards or similar items

For me that can mean switch fuses say or it can mean protection devices singular, so I always did an EIC for protection devices change.

Don't you just love these regulations. My interpretation is that a distribution board is different to a RCBO/MCB!!

In all honesty I doubt you'll get a dawn raid by the Certification police if you used a MEIWC the same as if I used the EIC, for me it was just a matter of how I interpreted it.

End of the day you'll have fitted a safer protective device, tested it's operation and the circuit's characteristics noted it and issued a certificate, just semantics really what one

You can't use a MWEIC for the replacement of a DB or similar, because the MWEIC is intended for additions or alterations to a single circuit.
In this instance similar refers to any item of equipment that would affect more than one circuit.

Quite agree. I was simply pondering over using the MWC to certificate the change from a MCB to a RCBO and a new bathroom feed.

i would used a MWC unless i was doing any mods to more than 1 circuit. just personal preference (i hate paperwork).

I had same problem and when contacted elecsa they replied 'because u've change the circuit protection device a EIC needs to be done'

This is where I think its all gone mad. A MWC can state a change such as MCB to RCBO and neatly lists all the necessary tests. An EIC would contain the same information but over several pages - and hence why I think that using a MWC is a sensible move for the sparky and the customer.

I asked the same question of ELECSA tech and recieved an email reply which agreed that an MWC was appropriate. It could take me ages to find the email, but I'll have a quick look later.

MWC already had my vote, but I asked because of all the threads we see asking this same question.

As the MCB/RCBO only protects one circuit, then the use of a MWEIC is quite acceptable.
