Hi guys, I`ve had an apprentice on a government scheme for 9 months now he has previously had 2 sick days which I have paid him for, but this week he hasn't been in at all saying he is ill. I have no contract of employment in place. Do I need to pay him? thanks

I'm an apprentice and employed paye should I be gettin holiday/sick pay/college/ bank holidays ?

you should get paid holidays including bank holidays, paid for the college days. not sure about sick pay rules these days.

It all depends on what your terms of employment are, you should have a contract between yourself on your employer. As a paye employee you are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay, protection against unfair dismissal, maternity/paternity leave etc, but you should have an employment contract. If not, seek advice from the CAB.

Asked my 'friend'. You should go to the Acas - Home web site. Lots of information there, even a help line. Not sure of your age elliot, but there are specific rules for young persons. You are entitled to statutory entitlements, but perhaps not employer entitlements unless these were agreed either verbally or written. Acas should be able to answer your queries.

as an apprentic, my contract of employment was "take it or leave it" !!
An excert from mine
"Do what you're told when you're told to do it. Failure to comply will result in a crack round the ear, persistent failure will result in you being sacked. If you're lucky we will pay you on a Friday"
Simple and to the point. Everyone knew where they stood.

Apprentices need to learn when they had too much beer night before or they have a tickly cough its not an excuse to throw a sicky.... strange how 20+ yrs ago a sick day was rare in any employment but now lifes so stressful that any excuse and its '''im too ill'''

I had an operation on my eye about 20yrs ago i was give a 5day sick note... operation was at 10:30am i was in work by 1pm.
The kids coming out of school now are nowt but big girls blouses.

when i was an apprentice i didnt get sick pay but it was explained to me when i started the job. I had no written or signed contract but it was understood and i wouldn't of messed with the guy haha
