I have my first job so I can get signed off by one of the part p bodies. I need to know the best route to take for the isolation of the supply to the unit. I'm from Brentwood in Essex and wondering how easy it is to get the supplier to fit an isolation switch inplaceof the Henley block. And what it costsThanks

twice in the last 3 months when the DNO have attended to sort bad earth, they haven't even bothered to reseal the cut out fuse before they leave.

On both occasions they never had seals fitted in the first place. How bothered do you really think they really are regarding broken or missing seals.

Think the suppliers are more interested if you tamper with the seals on the meter

Please remember if you are going to remove the service fuse, take a good look at it first to ensure no damage & it is securely fixed to the back board, you dont want one comming apart on you!

Also think about a strip of gaffer tape over the housing, saves you or anything else touching the terminals

For your own piece of mind and safety,on this occasion I would suggest doing the almost impossible, and contacting the Dno to arrange dis connection and re connection
It can be done at the same time if you provide the isolator, which can be mounted prior to them coming out

What you then do in future is another matter

There have been questions on here off applicants to schemes, concerned that the cut out has no seals
Dont let these concerns interfere with the main objective of getting registered
Pay them the ransom fee and be clear of any of those concerns, this once at least

All I can add to this pabold is that in my years the worse incident I have seen was when a lad was replacing a service fuse on an old cast head that disintegrated and blew his hand up, and to this day his hand is webbed and he still as problems using it.

True he was putting the fuse back in on load after doing work on a CU, and that caused the blow, but the holder would still have disintegrated and if that happens you will have some explaining to do

I have posted this before. A year or 2 ago an Electrician got killed when he attempted to remove the cutout fuse. he got hold of the fuse carrier and gripped it to pull it out, the fuse carrier crumbled in his hand, and he ended up with handful of copper. I prefer to pull the tails out of the meter live, with a nice clean pair of VDE 10kV pliers. I will only pull a fuse if it is in a nice shiny new grey carrier.

Cheers..........Howard

I had this problem on my first assessment. As I went through the safe isolation procedure, my words were something along these lines.... "Luckily for me, there was no seal on this fuse when i got here so it saved me having to go to all the trouble of calling the DNO out". My assessor just smiled...

but that would mean cutting the meter seals, which we have to do to fit the new tails anyway.
