We have a completely different system in the UK, which is where most of us are based.

I believe the white wire is used with either the red or black wire, for 110V, and the red and black wires are used together, for 220V.

The supply system can be complex.
As far as I can figure it:
Single phase 230V centre tapped N (115V)
Three phase 230V star tapped N (125V)
Some older systems use Scott transformers where the phases angles are at 90°. Used I think for 115V only. I’ll be honest I’ve tried to get my head around them and gave up!
