To the op
You explained you are just starting out,its fine to get your hands into the practical aspect of the trade but it should be done under supervision
You are experimenting with a job that is potentially dangerous, getting some hands on with no or little idea of what it is you are actually doing is not the way to progress
The experiment has resulted in you breaking a very basic rule of electrical installation,"testing of the system" to ensure safety prior to energising

There are countless people doing brain dead installation work without a clue what they are doing, the systems may be very dangerous but they can get away with sometimes unbelievable and terrible installation work (see the thread showing pictures that is currently running)

You are starting out on a long road, don't deviate away from the main highway and have an instructor sitting with you for the first part of the journey whilst you learn the basics

To those who gave him advice on how to rectify his mistakes, cough cough, say no more

Expected to get stick but oh well, if it solves the problem then so be it. As for the comments about my course, the standard of teaching was terrible and some of the tutors were "disciplined" my level 2 course I near enough taught myself it's only due to a new tutor coming in and some more self study that's getting me through level 3, passed my Principles exam a few weeks ago, just have design & testing/ fault finding left to do. I know myself that I'm behind other people who are at the same stage as me hence why I'm trying to do more stuff indecently but with advice to get me up to pace with other students with tutors that know how to teach, oh well nevermind, you've all told me the problem so thank you.

just quickly, if I was to connect the Neutrals yet it still didn't work, what else could it be down too?

Well you could have fooled me, i was convinced you'd only just started your training!! I find it hard to believe you have got through level 2 , let alone aspects of level 3 course work. Your last sentence above only serves to support my disbelief!!

Wow, I came here looking for some advice and all I get is abuse, I feel like the producer of Loose Women, giving you all a topic to whine and b***h about.. Suppose being be-littled by my superiors on here is just readying me up for the real world. I mustn't have realised that you lot never made mistakes as trainees.

Ive got the answer to my question now you can all carry on with your lives, thanks.

You have been given the answer to your question and been given advice about joining the trainee section that could help you out in your training without the fear of getting a bit of stick etc. you haven't said thanks or liked any of the comments that gave you the answer to your question and now have an attitude!

I said thanks at the end of my last post and in a previous post, as for the liking posts I'm new to the forums and didn't know that was what I was meant to do.. I'll go through and like them all now.

Sorry, but i always speak as i find!!

Fortunately i had qualified mentors supervising me as a trainee that wouldn't allow mistakes of any consequence to arise. Minor mistakes were made, but frankly not to the degree of not knowing that a bank of light fittings need a neutral to work, at least not at the stage of training you say you are at!!

Yes you do now have the answer to your question, but i wonder how much of that answer has actually sunk in??

We all made mistakes as apprentices, and our mentors will have dealt with them in whatever way they saw fit.
What you have done by energising a circuit without a neutral connected is create an extremely dangerous situation risking damage to connected equipment and the life of the user of the installation. Does your insurance cover you for doing this work without suitable qualification or experience?

The knowledge that an electrical circuit needs to be complete and unbroken to work is taught in school at a very early age, so if you cannot get that right you have to expect some serious Mickey taking!

Actually, I'm not going to take the abuse in a bad way, I'm going to take it as a reality check that I need to do more self study, so thanks for the abuse, in a way.

You call it abuse, but actually is it, ....it should be seen as a reality check to your present level of knowledge. Think about it, you actually drew the circuit in question out, and still you didn't/couldn't see the blatant/obvious mistake. You know this is really very basic, basic stuff!!

I strongly suggest that you get yourself into this forums training section, it may help you more than you may think!!

This trade, today, really does make me shiver.

And how the hell can anyone on here have the gall to give an answer to such a basic question????
