Discuss New Build Home Media/Entertainment wiring plus future proofing design/advice! in the FreeSat, Sky, VirginMedia Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net
Hello,
My first post here so apologies for any mistakes/breaking of the rules etc! Ive tried to read the rules and think this is the right place etc.
Im currently building a new build home and with windows going in next week and the roof pretty much watertight - its time to start confirming my plans for wiring etc.
Ive got in my head what i want to do in the main for internet and potential future whole house audio. Where i'm looking for help is the TV/video area as all the reasearch done so far has left my head spinning (or i could just install a few of everything!)
I will be living in the house for a while, but planning to sell it on relativley soon. I dont watch TV myself, anything I do would be online/dvd at best. However, I want to future proof the property and add value for future owners as best i can.
Ive identified rooms and locations where TV/Screens are likely to end up in all major rooms, and i want to know what cabling people would advise to install to these points. I will have power here (obviously) and 2 x data points at present (for internet to screen and connection to future audio system)
- Do i need any more data points - or would I even get away with 1?
- TV/Ariel connection - what cabling & how many?
- For my whole house audio, I'm running speaker cables to a central point. Do I need to add anything other than a data run (or two) to the TV/Screen points?
Any advice would be appriciated
Thanks in advance!!
how deep are your pockets?
how deep are your pockets?
I was waiting for this I guess.....
Their not, and in the main I want to just add the cabling or the provision for it - spending a few hundred ÂŁÂŁ on cabling iI can do, and maybe add things further down the line as and when I can afford it
My father build his own house a few years back and didnt really think about anything like this, and is now kicking himself (or his teenage family are) as there isnt provision for modern technology and hes not keen on ripping walls out etc.
I am pushing the ceiling of the property on some fronts, but if it will add value then i'm certainly keen to consider.
how deep are your pockets?
And how long is a piece of string?
So many options and variations you would ideally need a site visit with someone who specialises in AV installations.
Most electricians are more than competent with TV points, data and satellite etc but whole building sound systems are a little bit more specialised.
Personally I’d look at putting at least one hdmi cable in. Just to stop these having to be on show when you want to plug your PS4 in
I would doubt you'll add any real long term valve to the property, compared to your initially investment in AV system.
Everyone uses wireless speaker ECT now anyway, give people more choice to change things around.
I would just go for tv points in rooms at sensible locations and Maybe some j45 network ports.
How can you future proof entertainment media.
One week it’s flat screens with separate power supplies, then it’s flat screens with inbuilt power supplies, then it’s curved screens, or screens that become mirrors when turned off.
Probably have organic LEDs next, or pull down screens that roll up like a blind.

OK, I've considered this but there also seems to be a strong argument for just running a decent cat.6 and using a converter?
Thoughts on this?
Id run 1 tv point to each room with 1 cat5 point and leave it at that, you will not add value to the property, and definately dont do the audio!
When we did our house, each bedroom and where we wanted a tv downstairs each has 2 x satellite grade cables run back to a central point in the loft and also cat 5 back to a central point. I also ran bt cables too.
Not all connections are connected or used, but the cables as there should I want to use them.
I moved into a new build, which has tv points and data points in most rooms. Which is pretty pointless for me with wi-fi & Sky Q. So I'd keep it simple, if your planning to sell soon as. Unless your looking to have a hi tech honey trap for some mug
Run everything back to a central point, run in an extra cat6 to each point for HDMI and and install a HDMI matrix at the central point. You could install another cat 5 or 6 for infrared eyes. Most AV companies we’ve worked along side of spec 4 X cat6 and 2x twin sat to each point.
You need three coax cables to each TV point, 2 for a satellite dish and 1 for an aerial (Not Ariel which is a brand of washing powder). Use good cables such as PF 100 and run them to a central point or perhaps the loft. Run at least 2 data cables as well. An alternative would be to run trunking around 35 mm with a draw wire in it so a future owner could put in what he needs.
What are you looking to do e.g cinema system ,sound systems etc as depending on your plans will depend on how you go about it. Unfortunately I tend to go a bit crazy if the customer lets me so the best way to get help from the guys on here you might have to be a bit more specific.
I have found it is better to run extra HDMI (sat/cable, games consuls, ip tv, dvd, etc) or use cinema amp.
as I said give us a bit more info
also run min 3 cat 6 to tv's (1 for smart tv and 2 for future use eg some new systems use cat6 for info -signal transfer) or HDMI over cat6 up to 30m with full remote control.
Sorry I get a bit excited with this stuff as just finished a cinema room
7 speaker Dolby Atmos system with 10" sub in wall
controlled using control4 system.
to get an idea of what I am on about have a look at lord Balfour cottage on facebook
some people have OCD apparently I suffer from LED
sorry again I get excited with this stuff
Wf100 for satellite cable/vm cable
Cat 6 for networking especially with 1gbps networks..
I would also add audio cables...
