Hi, Thanks for letting em join the site, I hope someone can help ?
I'm wanting some sound advice from you seasoned pro's.

I have been working in the IT industry for over 9 years and it's taken me that length of time to work out it's dull as ! I've also been out of work after contracts ended which is a bit rubbish, I hate not working.
My Dad is an electrician and suggested I get into the trade too.(I don't live near him now so working with him isn't an option really)

Could anyone give me some advice on the best way to go about this and in effect re-train. Although I have worked with my Dad and carried out many installations I don't have any theory experience and was just carrying out instructions from him. I want to know why I was doing things the way I did them!

I am 33 and going back to college full time isn't an option. I live in suffolk

Many thanks

Adam

What work do you intend on doing?

Domestic - Try the EAL Domestic Installers Course.
Commercial/Industrial - You'll need to do the C&G 2330 course, you can do this at college 2 evenings a week or the more expensive route is to look at a company like OLCI or Able Skills etc:D

You'd then need to do the 2391 Inspection and Test and 17th Ed wiring regs. :)

Hope this helps!

Thanks Brightspark

Pretty much what I thought, I can't find a local college in Suffolk where I can do this as they all want you to be doing an apprenticeship which at my ripe old age isn't really an option. I have looked at the OLCI 2330 course and it looks good but it's expensive like you said. I'll keep searching the collage route

Thanks Again

I'm in the same situation. I'm 27 and at the moment working in the security industry at the Olympic Village but I reckon after the contract end I will become unemployed. My workmate is due to finish his 2330 lvl 2 full time, got the job where they will pay him 10 quids ph and let him do level 3 for free.

As I still have about 1,5 half year till the end of contract I'm thinking about going the way he did. I can do 2330 college way (as I'm working nights) but I have some questions and I wonder if you could help me.

I've read a lot in this forum but still needs some issues to be clarified.
- is this going to be the right way - 2330 lvl2, 17th, getting a job, (I wonder if there's a need to do lvl3 after that, 2382,2391) or is it mandatory (2330 lv2,lv3 and then all the others)
- 2330 lv3 do I HAVE to be employed as an electrician/mate? or can it be any other job? also what is going to happen when I'll lose the job while doing level 3
- what qualifications does one need to start their own business (apart from having a lot of experience)?

Basically only that level 3 is getting me shivers cause I've heard that companies are not keen to hire apprentices/mates anymore? and without a job you cant do lvl 3 can you?

I hope you dont mind stealing your topic ajb_uk. I didnt want to litter this forum with another "new career" topic.

Hi Amok

I've been looking into this further and you might want to take a look at Plumbing course | Construction Training | Electrician Courses | DIY Skills it's really good for information and clear with what you need and don't need. There are courses out their where you can get DOMESTIC installation qualification and you must have your work certified 99% of the time. If you're willing to go work for an electrician for nothing for a couple of weeks that's one way round it. I'm lucky that my farther is an electrician so I'm hopefully going to work with him once I have decided which route I'm going to take. I'm tempted to do the 2330 part 2 & 3 then do the part p and 17th edition.

Also Check out OLCI Electrical Courses & Electrical Training 0800 058 2848 "Become and Electrician" this also includes NVQ level 3 preparation and test which would allow you to get your JIB Gold Card. However you would need your work checking again by someone from the governing body you decide to join.

Hope this helps

thx for that.

I've read about those trainings and I was also on a meeting with a representant of that kind of company. They want over 5k for a distance learning and that is 1) a lot of money 2) not recomended.

Like you I'm really into proper college route - starting from lvl2 2330...they want 1600 for a proper two days theory one day practice a week. As I am working nights and still have at least 18 moths of my own job + lot of time to study I reckon that is the right way.

Just need that to be clarified:

- 2330 lv3 do I HAVE to be employed as an electrician/mate before I can start the course? or can it be any other job? also what is going to happen when I'll lose that onsite job while doing level 3
